RMS / Clutch / Flywheel
 

My '03 boxster with 48M miles is starting to leak oil and needs a rear seal.

Discussed with my mechanic and he suggests (and I agree) that now is the time to do a clutch. He also will check the flywheel for wear which I assume is normal.

For those that have gone through this expensive exercise have they replaced all three and is this normal wear time. Are replacement parts made to last any longer or better made. thanks

If you're proceeding with the RMS replacement yes this is the time to do the clutch. Clutch and flywheel has to be removed to access the RMS.

40K-50K miles is a reasonable amount of wear for a clutch. You undoubtedly will want/need a new one. Maybe see if he can inspect the flywheel first, before he just replaces it. The part is usually over $800.

No, in regards to your question about the flywheel & clutch. I believe techs may be using an improved RMS now.

If you are doing that, why don't you also look into retro-fitting the IMS?

You are there....might as well do that.

I doublt you'll need a new flywheel...clutch might even be fine, but for $400, might as well replace.

The recommendation was to change the clutch based on age and I have a guaranty that will pay for the RMS so it's a cheap repair at least (my cost).
My mechanic ( former Porsche dealership mechanic) didn't say he had to replace the flywheel but as stated it certainly needs to be checked.
Good idea on the IMS and will mention it to him.
