WARNING!! NOT for the faint of heart! Extra Crispy Boxster

Came across this while driving back home last night so I rushed home and grabbed my camera. No one was around when I first got there only the burning smell and the fire department foam on the pavement. I talked to a few people who work in the strip mall where this was at. They said some guy in a business suit, said his boxster stalled so he rolled into the the place its at now and tried to restart it, then there was a little bit of smoke from the rear of the box then there was ALOT of smoke! I told them that we have heard of this on this forum but that it was pretty rare. I would liked to have talked to the driver.

:(

Here are more pictures..

well as long as he wasn't hurt he is a pretty damn lucky guy since now the insurance will pay for his car as a total. had it not burned and the engine was gone he would be shelling out abut 15k for a new engine at least now he can just get a new car with the money the insurance will pay him rather than be pissed he has to pay $$$ for a f-uped engine...

It must have been quite a fire to eviscerate the engine bay and torch the interior. With so much damage I do not understand how did the Bose box escaped relatively unharmed? At least the litronics survived!

mikes_box 04-03-2009 09:30 AM

First dibs on the litronics!!!

ekam 04-03-2009 09:34 AM

How much does he want for those S calipers?

angman 04-03-2009 09:43 AM

Dibs on that three spoke wheel.

kabel 04-03-2009 10:09 AM

was it windy there? Looks like the fire blew from left rear to front right... Any guess on the MY?

Gougoushu 04-03-2009 10:14 AM

Horrible photos, I studied every one of them. Thanks for posting.

Maybe the engine DID go bad and the owner somehow rolled it into that lot for a bit of ye olde arson? It WOULD be tempting, and a lot easier and cheaper than buying an engine .... If so, he did a damn good job.

blue2000s 04-03-2009 10:28 AM

That'll buff right out.

No it wasn't really windy at all. The MY?

Yeah it was pretty amazing to see not much damage towards the front of the car, I still cant figure out why there is a big pick hole from ( I assume) the fire department on the front drivers side fender. Believe me, I thought about how those headlights would look on my box.

BTW, I re uploaded all those pics plus a couple more in the full high resolution that I shot them in. I wanted to go back in the morning to get some day shots, but I'm sure it would have been towed by then.

I updated the Link with the HIGH RES photos

Seeing this makes me very thankful that when I had my fire I was able to put it out
immediately. I didn't have any damage at all other than the part that let go (power steering hose up against the headers).

that car is so beyond "organ donation" it's not funny.... that is truly "totalled"

:ah:

note to self - if you ever suddenly have engine failure, you need to carry a small gas can in the trunk - so you can quickly douse your car in gas and light it on fire.... instant insurance payount and new boxster for the price of a small deductible... of course you might also get an all expense paid trip to the big house for insurance fraud... :)

RandallNeighbour 04-03-2009 06:58 PM

So why was the front hood damaged if the fire was in the rear? Did the fire department pry open the front trunk to douse it in water in case the fire went into the front trunk?

I'm really glad this didn't happen to my car. I have 3x the insurance value invested in my 12 year old Porsche.

If people keep calling dibs on parts, BruceLee will have to move this thread to the classifieds. :D

As far a MY goes, doesn't it have to be a 2000-2002 since it's a 986S with amber taillites?

Lil bastard 04-03-2009 07:18 PM

I don't know which one is worse... that one... or Insite's...lol
