What to inspect in almost new 2006 Boxster S?
 

Hello, everyone.

First I'd like to mention all the threads have been very helpful. I am offered a 2006 Boxster S for a good price from a private party. The car has less than 23K miles. Since it's still under warranty, do I need to have it inspect thoroughly before purchase such as a PPI suggested for older 986's?

From the looks of the car, it's almost brand new and the current owner really takes good care of the car. From reading the forums, it looks like the 987's are holding up well versus the 986's.

You should still do a PPI.

Look for maintence records.

1) Oil should have been changed yearly. At least 3 should have already been done. Mobil 1.

2) Brake fluid should have been changed last year- this is about $250

3) How are the tires. If not replaced recently, they will be soon. For about $2,000

4) Was the 20,000 mile service done? Book stamped? This is about $1,200.

I think a lot depends on what a "good price" is - if it is real cheap then you may not want an inspection. But then again...

I did last year. I have 19 inch Carrera Classic wheels. Went with PS2's. The rear tires are 265/35 ($405 each) and the fronts are 235/35 ($370 each). Mounting and balancing was about $250. Total was $1,800. If you selected a "road hazard" policy, that would be about another $200. Like I said, "about $2,000 for tires".

I'd say if you have to ask what to look for you should pay an expert for a PPI.

Preferably by someone who can read out how many times it bounced off the rev limiter.

Well now, you have factor in that not everybody is going to have the optional 19" wheels. Even then, you can get the ContiSportContact 3 in those sizes for $1100. But if he has the more common 18" wheels, he'll only be out ~$850 for something like an Eagle F1. So, could also be about $1,000 for tires, depending on wheel diameter.

Or he could just buy mine and not have to worry about anything since nothing is needed and all the bases are covered :D

But anyone buying a used car, no matter what car it is, needs to know what to consider based on the price...some things can be overlooked, such as tires, if the price reflects it.

i bought a 2006 with 15,000km, it had warranty, and its first oil change, i wasn't concerned about a ppi,

brake flush is an easy doit-yourself,

and tires you can see, so if you can get service records, and the price is right, just make them show you that everything works, and check the warranty expire date,


then book it in to address any niggly items (on warranty)

its all a lot more stress free if you know the seller.... (i didn't but the dealer was acting as a go between)

Absolutely. Hate to find out the hard way that your warranty is non-existent because the computer knows something you don't.

Check for some basic items, like all the keys, the owner manual, the service manual, everything in the tool kit, the code for the radio (if applicable), wheel locks, wind screen bag, etc. Everthing that should have came with the car when it came from Porsche.
