Roof wont lower!

OK, the car is under warranty for 12 months, but I'd like to know what the problem is likely to be, before it goes back to the dealership.

I tried to lower the roof yesterday evening for the trip home from work, and it didn't like the idea one bit. I unclipped the front, and pressed the button. There was a noise like the normal mechanism, but about 10 times louder, a real grinding sound. Then it just stopped. I got out to see what was wrong, and the rear panel had lifted on one side (the left hand side) about 50mm (2 inches), but on the right hand side, it was still fully down. I pressed the close button on the dash, which closed it all ok, and then I tried again. Exact same thing happened again.

I've spoken to the dealer, and the car will go in probably tomorrow, but I'm worried now. I've had the car only a few weeks, and I'm having 1 or 2 problems. Please tell me that I'm unlucky, and Boxters are usually pretty strong!!

Anyones else experienced this type of roof problem?

Thanks

Paul

I have never experience this exact issue with any of my Boxsters. Top issues can happen but they are normally quickly resolved by a dealer visit. Under warranty, not to worry!

Best of luck with your new Boxster!

I had the exact same problem and what happened was that the top needs to be synchronized. You have the left and right side arms that move when you lower or raise the top, the two arms must be out of sync if only one side is raising. The fix caost me around 700.00 and it works fine now. I was told not to raise and lower the top a lot because this could happen again.

Sounds like this could be the problem. Glad it's under warranty if this is the repair fee!

However, to be told not to raise and lower the hood a lot seems crazy. This is supposed to be reliable machinery! I like to put the hood down as often as I can, but living in England means I quite often have to put it up again....quickly!

Thanks for the advice, just been told the car cannot be booked in for over a week due to a lack of loan cars. :(

Sounds like the same problem I had with mine. It turned out to be the top transmission, and like I mentioned in the warranty post, I think it was about $800 to fix.

Roof problems?

Mine did the same thing? Now the second time. I fixedit the first time. The cable poped out for some unknown reason. This time it broke a part that is off the left transmission. I dont know why it did that? Does anyone have a shop manual or know how to syncronize this thing? :
