I finally found out what the sound was. There is an elastic band attached to a spring inside the roof that keeps the roof gathered on the sides. This band had snapped. Eventually, the right edge of the roof began to fail to slot into the track when the roof was closing. A convertible roof specialist fixed the problem easily in one day. It was not an expensive repair. Furthermore, a lot of squeaking and rattling that was coming from the roof is gone now.
