Inexpensive Aftermarket Wheels?
I'm looking to upgrade my 03 16" base Boxster wheels. I'm thinking of 17" or 18"'s max. I've seen a few styles on this site, www.wheelsandcaps.com. Anyone know about this company or any other aftermarket wheel companies with inexpensive wheels ($250 per wheel)?

Try https://986forum.com/forums/wheeldynamics.net A bunch of us have gotten our wheels from them. They have a decent selection, good prices and excellent customer service.

I got mine last year at Wheels Dynamics (see sig picture) and found the receipt of how much I paid for it...
$392 per set (wheels and tire) Item Price: $1,449.00 USD Sales Tax: $119.54 USD Total: $1,568.54 USD Order Description: 1 Set Carrera Lightweight Wheels 18x8, and 18x10, w/ Hankook Tires 225/40, and 265/35/18 |
you have cheaper options than Wheel Dynamics too. Check Ebay.
These are $800 http://members.cox.net/snafe5/PORSCHE458ONE.JPG I was searching for winter wheels but stupidly gave up and ended up paying $170 to mount my winter tires. That's the second time I payed that much. $340 that could have gone towards another set. |
Look for used Boxster wheels on ebay. 18's look nicer but are usually heavier along with more costly rubber.
If you're not getting OEM wheels, check with the vendor on wheel weight. Many of the Porsche knockoff wheels are a lot heavier (4-6lbs/wheel) than the real deal. Extra unsprung weight is not good. personally, I like the classic 5 spoke light weights on a 986--I'll find a picture and post it. |
These are Boxster"replicas"; 17" with proer offsets. not sure on the weight. $400+ shipping.

seems I am the only one who actually clicked the link that Rev. Al provided :D
http://www.wheelsandcaps.com/specials_packages_item.asp?id=20&part=ALY67304U#AL Y67304U $569 + tax for a set of Carrera lightweights - that ain't bad! No idea about the quality though |

Not all wheels are created equal. Porsche's wheels are forged, which is a process that creates a very strong, light wheel. Most of the cheap-os are cast, which uses a softer alloy of aluminum and without the work hardening of the forging process, they are much easier to bend and damage. I'm not saying the lower price isn't justifiable, but you are getting a better product by paying more (in general).
Here's a good read: http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/tech/0205scc_wheel_tech_guide/index.html |
Thanks for the feedback.

I don't know anything about this company but there was someone else out with Porsche replicas last year based in CA that was selling the classic 5 spoke light weight design for around $1k; these guys are selling them for at least a third lower. My guess is these are manufactured in China (what isn't) so the quality might not be up to OEM standards.
I'd still suggest looking on various sites for used Porsche OEM wheels; they are light strong and being used, they should be priced right. |
Hey Mike, are you talking about this one? This is what I got from Wheels Dynamics and really happy about how much I paid for it.

Yep, those are the ones
Jeph had a set of those also. Those wheels look great on both the 986 and 987 models. About $900 IIRC?

Why Buy Aftermarket When You Can Have the Real Deal?
You get real Porsche wheels for the same or less $$$ than you guys have been mentioning, to-wit, 17x7 reconditioned Porsche wheels
* For $179 from http://shop.wheelsrims.net/search.html?make=porsche&model=boxster&year=1999&p art_type= * For $295 each at http://www.wheelcollision.com/pors6.htm. |
Let's Get Real
I've owned and driven Porsches for nearly thirty years, both here and in Germany. The words inexpensive and Porsche can not be used in the same sentence. You either want it enough to pay for it, or you don't. There are beautiful Porsche wheels out there and some with great durability, but none of them are "inexpensive." If you want inexpensive get a Kia.
