What tools are needed to replace the rear trunk shocks?
 

What tools / additional parts are needed to replace the rear trunk shocks on a '98 986 base model?

I have 2 replacement Stabilus shocks (PNA#986-512-551-01-M24) and was hoping I could replace them with out a trip to the shop.

My 60k mile service is right around the corner, so if replacing them is a major headache, I can just wait until I take the car back in to the mechanic.

Youll need pliers... thats about it... Pull the flat curved metal retainer outward from both the top mount and lower mount of the old struts with the pliers then install the new ones in reverse order... This should take 10 minutes to do if its your first time and 2 minutes if youve done this before.

Just a straight slot screw driver, ease the edge of the screw driver into to the copperish colored retention clips on the "ball" ends of ea. support they keep the shocks on the balls of the truck/lid. then pop the supports off the balls with your hand. it takes no time. :D

I ordered a set of replacement shocks for the front trunk. How stiff should these be? I can't compress them by hand at all. I'm afaid to install them, thinking they may bend something when I try to close the trunk lid.

It's called leverage...install and you'll be good to go.

My Box is going on seven yrs old and the hood shocks are original and going strong; unlike my 911 that seems to need these replaced every year (especially on a long hood).
