1978 911 Turbo Carrera

88K miles on the clock. I got to drive this car the other day and damn is it fast. You can drive it like a normal car but, as soon as you put your foot into it, it takes off like a rocket hitting 2 bars on the turbo meter. It only weighs about 2700lbs. This is one of the 10 Porsche's and growing my dad owns.

He told me last night that he remembers when this car first came out, he was working at Texaco at the time and said he'd like to have one but, couldn't afford it at that time. Now, 30 years later he has the car he drooled over for years.

He also picked this up in Colorado last week. It's a 52' 356 Pre-A with a 912 motor and the original in a crate. Beautiful car inside and out.

Thanks for sharing. Both are beautiful looking cars. The '78 would be a hoot to drive.

The 356 is beautiful...

Are you sure that's a '78 turbo? Looks like a '77 3.0 ltr non-intercooled car. The tail on '78 and later cars was enlarged to fit the intercooler and more powerful 3.3 ltr motor. Still fun and a hand full.

I had an '88 turbo factory slantnose; too much turbo lag for my tastes, though the car was extremely fast when the boost kicked in. The '88s were a bit heavier than a '77 as well.

Very sweet!! Thanks for the pics!!

your dad has 10 Porsches.... . NICE.

I'm happy with ONE. :)

What else does he have?????

Better question is: what does your dad DO for a living - maybe I should look into it....

I also thought it was a 77 but, I saw the title and it's a 78. Surely the car isn't titled wrong.

Hmmmm... don't mean to argue, but that silver 930 is surely a 76 or 77 model, at least in the U.S. As pointed out, the whaletail is the non-intercooled tail from the 3.0 liter, and also the turbocarrera badge on back was replaced with just a turbo badge in 78. If it's registered as a 78, it could be either a county govt worker's pinkie slipped when typing somewhere along the line (yeah, what chance is there of that :) :) ) or perhaps it is from some other market where the 3.0 was still used in '78. I don't know if there was such a thing, but could have come from Canada I suppose and there might have been some '78s with the 3.0.

Anyway you cut it, it's a beautiful car. Alas, it's been my experience that the intercooled 3.3 turbos (78-88, anyway) were not much fun to drive in the real world, owing to massive turbo lag, very low compression ratio to prevent knock before engine electronics could do so, and a 4-speed tranny whose ratios would take you from 0 to 180mph (the engine wouldn't push the car that fast, but it was geared for it.). I've never driven a 3.0 liter -- I imagine the lack of intercooler would make the car more responsive, while reducing power a bit.

But they are achingly beautiful cars, for sure.

Lets see on MY dream car list:

993TT Check
F-355 Check
930 Check
Ford GT Check

Now if only the R8 was the TDI they should have came out with my list would be done.

Your pops has done very well collecting a great collection of cars.

At first glance I drool over owning your dad's collection. Beautiful!

Then reality hits. Every one of those cars needs at least a couple of grand a year in maintenance and repairs. Even if I had the money to maintain them, I wouldn't have the time to get it all done and keep them running.

Owning a 97 boxster is enough of a maintenance headache for me....

but I still love the dream of having that stable full of exotics WITH a full time mechanic :D

I would rather have the house than any of those cars. :) Super nice cars to be sure.
