Brake Squeal & EBC Pads
I put in some EBC Red Stuff pads in a couple of weeks ago. They stop great and are supposed to take a long time to 'bed in'. Still thought the squeal is a tad embarrassing in a crowd. Is this just the glaze from the brake-in period?
Thanks Chris |

I've found on other cars I've owned that brake squeal is due to dust and dirt between the piston and pad, and in general, isn't due to glazing or bedding in. I've used a couple of different products which either use a pad or a coating on the back of the brake pad to provide a soft or sticky interface, which eliminated squeal problems.

Find a back road and do five or six high speed stops...that will get them to bed in. By high speed, I don't mean excessive...just enough to do a good, hard stop without getting into the ABS.

I had the same problem when I installed Pagid brake pads on my 01. The fronts never squealed, but my rears squealed so much it drove me crazy, so I installed these anti-squeal brake pad liners, and it did the trick. You have to pull the pad out, and stick them to the BACK of the pad's backing plate. No more squealing brakes for me.

Guys,
EBC red pads use a ceramic liner instead of copper or steel. They vibrate at a higher frequency than a normal pad. When broken in, they squeal, but not at a level that humans can hear. They probaly drive dogs crazy though. They also come with a special backing plate provided by EBC that keep vibration down. All they should need is to be broken in and they will be fine. EBC is very specific about the break-in procedure because they have a special break-in liner on the pad surface. You are NOT supposed to do hard stops while first breaking in these pads, it will damage the disks. You have to follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Finally, highway miles are not break-in miles. You need to do the kind of light stop and go type driving that is recommended by EBC. Some of these suggestions may be good for other brake pads, but not for these pads. |
