What would you do with beat rims
I have four beater wheels that I got for track days. What would you do, if you were thinking about painting or restoring them to some level of dignity? All ideas, no matter how wacky, are welcome.

I helped a buddy of mine re-finish the wheels he used for snow tires.
We used aircraft stripper to remove all the old paint, then Dupli-color wheel color & clearcoat to re-finish them. It came out decent. If we had been more patient with the painting, it could have been better. Here's a vid I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5eK5OnHfqA |

Personally I'd polish the outer lip too, just to make it cool. Kirk |
LA Wheel and Tire will chrome them for you. Well actually it appears you send them like $600 + a large deposit, they send you a set of chromed rims that match your size and style, you send your rims to them and they refund the deposit.

Painting them solid black would definitely be smart, because I really do not keep these clean like I do my good wheels. I would like to see some wild ideas. Or if anyone wants to photoshop some ideas? |
What color is your car? Orange or lime green are always favorites of mine. Otherwise, paint them silver and be done with it.
No chrome...that's for Escalades. |
the car is black. So are the calipers. :(
I could paint the barrel blue and the lip yellow and the spokes...? silver? A wavy checkered flag? Or the barrel could be a checkered flag and the spokes and lip could be blue? What would that look like? Yowza! Hey, I saw a sparkly Z4 this morning. Sparkly as in glittery 'dune buggy' silver paint. Eck. |
I stand by my earlier comment...black car = orange or green ala GT3RS. Have fun, they're track wheels!

This thread has a few pictures of what I'm talking about. http://www.boxsterspec.com/index.php?showtopic=867&st=20 Scroll down on the second page and you'll see a black car with bright red wheels and a red car with bright yellow wheels. Here are your black wheels: http://www.boxsterspec.com/index.php?showtopic=1187&pid=5503&st=0&#entry5503 Kirk |

I got a set of winter wheels which lookes just about like yours. I deceided to paint them and through some research realized that the wheel color on Porsches were not the same as the Artic Silver of my car. I bought one of those cheap drop down sand balsters for about $35 , cleaned the wheels well and then went to the local Auto Paint store and got a pint of primer, a half pint of Artic Sliver and some clear coat and went home and sprayed the wheels. Came out great and have had a number of comments about what was different about my wheels, when told everyone just hit their forehead and said Oh. You can go to most any Auto Paint Store and get small quantities of any color you want. Ed

I think something like this would make those rims look a lot better. You could also add a personal touch with the stripe. Here are instructions:  http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10897&highlight=wheel+painting |
When re-finishing wheels you want to paint an not powder coat. Powder coating will not show small stress cracks if they occur.
