Can You Name This Intake?
I just bought this intake off of EBay, can anyone tell me the manufacturer? Seller doesn't know. Any words of wisdom about removal of the stock air box? I've read that its a ********************.

Looks like either an EvoMS or a AFE. I would guess AFE since I think they usually come with the blue cone filter. Hope you got a good deal :)

I paid $125 + $8 shipping (only 100 miles, should have just run up the highway and picked it up).

You got a good deal on that intake. It's the newer EVO model. Let me add a bit of advice: ditch the oiled filter and buy an AEM DryFlow air filter. You can get them from Jegs or Summit Racing for about $50...and not have to worry with a CEL caused by the oil from the filter. I got the 9" version, which required spacing the airbox out a bit, but it wasn't too troublesome. Another thing I found effective was to use some foam pipe insulation to seal the top of the airbox against the engine cover. It does a good job of keeping hot engine air away from the filter.
Enjoy the new sound and the bit of added HP! |
Thanks for the info J.Fro. I love the pipe insulation seal, its thick and collapsible and would do a great job. About the AEM filters, I went to the site and could not cross for an EVO filter. Can you tell me your AEM filter part number? Is it big? I like my air filters like I like my butts, BIG!! I can hear the song now;
I like big butts and I can not lie You other brothers can't deny That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist And a round thing in your face You get sprung... Thanks for the help. |
J.Fro,
Do you have a picture of your setup? -Steve |
There is nothing wrong with the cloth oiled cone filter. The problems arise when users over oil them, then wonder why they have problems down the road. I've used one in my '02 S (Evo Hi-Flow) for the last three and a half years without issue. Lightly oil the filter (if not pre-oiled from manufacturer) and wrap in newspaper for a day or two to soak up any extra oil. Why pay extra money for a filter you don't need?
Oh yeah, wait until you hear the sound! |

"Oh yeah, wait until you hear the sound!" I'm feeling like a school girl on prom night! :dance: I can't wait to get it. |
I found my receipt from Summit Racing: part number AVM-21 2039 DK. I'm pretty sure our cars use a 3" diameter intake tube...the length of the filter is about 9", and the diameter of the filter at its widest is around 5-6". It fills that airbox, and I had to space the airbox out from the car .5" or so. I used sheet styrofoam for that. I believe I also removed some of the insulation at the firewall and from the side of the car inside the airbox. With those mods, there is plenty of space for air to circulate around the filter providing 360 degrees of flow. I'll see if I can come up with a photo.

To answer your question regarding removal of the stock air box, yes it could be a pain "if" you choose to do it by direction. In my case, I had no intent on letting the stock air box collect dust in my garage, so I took it out in pieces; easy and quick. I choose not to loosen the intake manifold and present the opportunity for future leaks. The installation is easy and there is a good write-up on the Evo site for the DIY.
Good luck and enjoy the music. |
I will name it 'Bob'.
