They must be stock pictures. Neither of the units in the pictures would be compatible with a Boxster or 996.

If you have to ask how it works, I would stay away from it.

Why cheap out? Get a 9x7 shifter assembly, much easier to install and worth every penny.

I'm actually considering the 9x7 short shifter like "geoff" did, as I tried one of the regular 987 shifters in a new Boxster and it didn't do much for me...

How much different are the 9x7 and 9x6 short shift assemblies? Can I put a 9x7 assembly in my ’03?
One of the first upgrades I did was installed a B&M type short shift kit. Love it. I drove a Cayman the other day with a stock shifter and I was surprised how much longer the throw was.

Im considering a short shifter also but there seems to be so much noise on them I cant tell which is which. Ive been a big V8 iron displacement fan in the past and it always seemed that B&M was the mainstay of that world.
Does anyone have the pros and cons of each shifter? I think Id like to go ahead and order one to have on hand for the next rainy weekend day in Georgia...so I have a project ready to go.

Love my B&M short shift...everytime I drive a car (986 or 996) with the stock shifter, I am surprised at how long the throw is. Even the standard 9x7 shifter is way too long for me (my friend just bought a 997 Carrera S).

986 owner "geoff" figures his 9x7 short shifter is about a 25% reduction, vs the 15% of the standard 9x7 shifter. I understand from looking thru the forums that both the 9x7 standard and short shifters will fit in your 03. But why do that if you're happy with the B&M (at 35% reduction)?

Again, from my researching forums, here's what I've concluded:
In order of shift distance, shortest to longest:
Porsche / B&M short shifter for 986 35% reduction
Agency Power 35% reduction
eBay knockoffs of B&M 35% reduction
Schnell 30% reduction
Porsche 987/997 short shifter 997-424-983-00 25% reduction
Evo Swift Shift 20% reduction (only affects gears 1-3-5)
Porsche 987/997 standard shifter 997-424-010-00 15% reduction
This is also the order of shift effort or "notchiness", most notchy first. (except for 9x7 short shifter?)

So in terms of quality, if your OK with the "slottyness" of the B&M its a fine shifter?
I want to make sure I dont downgrade my new toy.

Apparently if you buy a short shifter for your 986 from Porsche, you're actually getting a shifter made by B&M

So does anyone have a clue as to what those short shifters in my original post are all about?

Like I said, stock pictures. One of them is a SSK for an older 911, the other I don't recognize.

The swift kit can't give a 20% reduction, there's just not enough room for it to lengthen the lever arm that much, and it will effect every gear, just like the other kits. t woks on the same principle as the others.
