Whining noise

After stopping the engine, I get this whining noise from somewhere in the car. It kind of sounds like the whine you get from the brakes when they are cold. Any idea what this might be? I haven't figured out where the noise is coming from yet. I will try to get a video of it if we can't figure out whats wrong.

How long does it last?

I'd say a good 10 seconds after the key is taken out of the ignition.

engine compartment exhaust fan perhaps?

kabel is probably right. Next time you hear this, go over to the passenger side (from the outside) and see if the sound is coming from the "vent" on that side. The "vent" on the driver's side is the intake (and gets de-snorkled frequently), so the two vents don't serve the same purpose.

If the sound is coming from the passenger side vent, that is the exhaust fan you are hearing.

Does it need repair? Can I leave it alone if it is the fan?

If it is the fan, then it is doing what it was designed to do.

Well, there is one other possibility. Check if the radio is on and listen for Nancy Peolsi in the rear speakers.
