For a car whose history you know very well (rather than through a 2hr PPI), for that year and mileage, plus the options, $11k is a steal. Even $12k is an amazing deal. Remember that while knowing the history of the car doesn't guarantee absence of failures in the future, it most definitely is worth its weight in gold (esp. the kind of history your dad's car has - driven gently for the past 50k miles... assuming thats how long he has had it).

Buy it, enjoy it.

PS: No, this isn't your dad.

I understand your indecision but I think once you get the car you will not regret it. Sounds like your getting an exceptional deal. Good luck.

UPDATE

I don't have the car YET, but it's about to happen.

Both my dad and I have been busy the last month, so we took our time working this out but the end result is I'm going to buy his Boxster.

It was very important to make sure we both felt good about the deal - neither side wants to feel taken advantage or - it's family! So we tried to work something out that was a win/win for both of us.

End result - Price = $13,500. But he carries a loan and only charges me 3% interest. it comes out to roughly $250/month which is dirt cheap in my opinion. As it's inter family - No sales tax.

I only need to budget for repairs and tires. :)

I am probably going to get a PPI - even though I know the history of the car. I drove it about a month ago, and it was making a hissing sound - like air leaking from an inner tube/tire when you gave it gas. I could only hear it with the top down when I was parking - driving really slow but on the gas a little bit. At speed - there was too much noise to hear. I wonder if it's an exhaust leak or vacuum leak. I'd like to find out what that is, and maybe jsut get it fixed while it's there. Then it would be nice if they would just look it over and tell me that there is nothing horribly wrong that someone like ME would not see, but a mechanic who knows what to look for WOULD see. The car has been serviced at the same dealer - so not only will they have the car, but they will know their own maintenance history on the car too.

I should have the car in the next week or two once we get all the details worked out.

Now I just have to drive it, enjoy it, and not worry too much about possible motor failures... :) I am not going to buy the warranty. $5000 is too much. maybe there is some cheaper warranty that would NOT cover small stuff and ONLY cover the mega huge stuff? we'll see.

thanks to the people here on the forum for all the help and advice. I know I am going to love this thing. I have driven a lot of cars, and the boxster has to be THE most fun one ever.

Are you still living at home?

Owning a Porsche between 80K to 120K can be expensive since many things will need to be replaced, most not covered by any warranty.

don't live at home. :)

36, married a 3 kids

Want a fun third car
Already have a large suv/family car and i have a nice sedan for dd

CPo cars are out of my budget. I could get screwed if the motor goes but I amokay with routine Maint even if I get hit a few grand here and there

If the engine fails I'll do a swap

I will put maybe 3-5k max per year onthe car so I want somethi g cheap but. Of a "cheap" car so no miata s2k etc

Let your Dad off the hook, get your own financing.

If your Porsche is like most it will need most of the following before 120K miles:

Clutch replacement
CV joints and boots (or at least repacked and new boots)
Struts
Control arms
rotors
water pump
serpertine belt, rollers, and tensioners
power steering pump
rack resealed
tires at least twice
Coolant tank
Air/oil separator
brake hoses (10 year item)
radiator hoses (10 year item)
a couple of wheel bearings (especially if you change wheels)
front motor mount

dad wants to carry the loan - it was part of our deal. w/out goign into the details - it's a win win for both of us. i know he could net more if he took a lump sum - but in the end - he is looking more for an annuity than a lump sum....

how much should I expect to pay for all that "stuff" between now and 120k?

i know what i'll pay for tires... the other maintenance items - i have no idea what i will spend.

for example:

cost of:

clutch
struts
control arms
etc?

Can you do any of the work yourself, if so you can get an idea of the price of the parts HERE
