Boxster + Dog

I am fortunate to have a beautiful dog as well as a Box. It was quite nice here a couple of days ago (low 80s) and I decided to take my aging dog on a walk near the water (shes shaggy and getting old, so I thought the cooler the better). I figured I would take the box and drop the top so I can get some enjoyment out of the ride as well.

My dog being quiet large (pics below), wasn't too comfortable in the passenger seat. Does anyone else take their dogs out in their boxes? If so, any tips on how to set up the passenger seat so my dog can lie down while I'm driving and so that I can see the side mirror?

Or if you just want to post pics of your animals thats cool too! I love showing pics of my dog.

Your dog is really pretty. What breed is she? Sorry I don't have any advice about how she can fit better in the seat. Here are some pics of my dog, and as you can see, she is pretty small.

My golden retriever's been in my boxster three times in the four years I've owned the car.

Every single time, she's scratched the crap out of one or more items. The seat, the door sill plate, the center console, etc.

She goes absolutely everywhere with my wife and I (stores, work, friend's homes, etc.) but only in the Lexus' back seat... not the boxster.

I will say though that when she's sitting up in the seat with the top down and rests her head on the window sill (a trait all Goldens posses), everyone driving by can't take their eyes off her :)

If I had a smaller dog like Lovebunny, I'd probably take it in the car more often.

Securing a large dog in a car can be done and they make harnesses for your seat to protect the dog and keep it from jumping out:

Unfortunately my dog is probably too stuborn to like being tethered to the seat. If I could get her to put her head out the window I bet she would be a lot more comfortable (she had her face planted against the windshield last time). Btw all your dogs look great, I been thinking that when the time comes I may want to get a labradoodle or a goldendoodle. Have a combo of the big dog/little dog thing thats cute as hell.

Oh, my dog is a Bouvier (des flandres). shes a belgian sheep dog

Jump, did your dog have her tail cut?

My dog went away after 15 years.

But I do have this girl. She sleeps on top of it every night to make sure the top is covered with hair and there are little footprints all over the car.

Actually, "Marley" after Bob Marley :D

Grogan's book came out in 2005. My Marley was born in 2000.

Great book, though ( and yes, I cried at the end ) :(

Can't wait for the movie ( with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston ) due this Christmas !

I'll take one of each, please.

I'm loving looking at everyone's dogs, and even though I'm not a "cat person," cartagena, your cats are adorable. There is a kitty in my neighborhood that I always see sleeping on the top of a conertible BMW around the corner. It must be a comfy place for cats.

Even though I have a cute little portable dog, I don't ride with her much. She does pretty good in the car, but I worry about getting in a wreck with her even with her harness on.

I've taken my brother's dog Zoe with me a few times, and one time I was going over some high speed bumps entering a parking lot with her. It's about three bumps and I have to sort of rev up my engine to get over them and sometimes the car rocks back and forth a bit in the process. She was standing on the seat leaning forward and every time the car would rock she'd rock back and forth with it. It's hard to describe, but she was so cute bouncing back and forth. Here are some pictures of her.

Yes, it is common for pointers to have their tails cropped when puppies. Who ever did my dog did it a little short though. I believe it is to prevent picking up burrs when hunting. I don't think I'd want to take your dog to the same places I take mine, beautiful dog but it looks like a Burr magnet! :)

fragdude 07-24-2008 12:55 PM

Jump, my dog also had its tail and ears clipped as according to her bread (so she doesn't get nipped at by goats and sheep). And I can sympathize with the burrs, she gets a ton (pic below I took an hour ago, she went rummaging through some plants today), but its a double edged sword, she does real well in the snow thanks to her hair. I would have loved it if I had a chance to try some dog specific sports with her like herding, but oh well. LB, by any chance is your dogs name tinkerbell? Whenever I hear paris hilton and dog in the same sentance I cringe, but I think it would be very fitting for your dog :) And the only thing my dog does when I go over speed bumps is fall...haha

Thats weird! I bet kids behind you love it though

Frodo 07-24-2008 04:18 PM

I've got a Springer Spaniel that rides with me all the time.

I got a blanket that I keep in the rear trunk and use it to cover the seat. Also ended up using an old pillow to lay across the console, since "Jake" lays down from time to time. (Before the pillow, he was starting to lightly scratch the console between the seats.) The pillow makes shifting slightly awkward---one has to kind of arch your forearm and elbow over him, but it's not too bad.

First time I had him ride with me (ie pre-pillow), he lays down and next thing you know both windows were randomly going up and down, seemingly of their own accord. Kind of freaked me out at first, since I didn't know why it was happening. (My pre-Boxster DD was---and sometimes is still---an old Camry, so I wasn't used to having the window controls anyplace but on the door.)

Anyway, got the pillow and problem solved.

Fragdude, sorry but I got no suggestions. You could try the pillow trick, but she's got a lot of size on Jake. (I think her front legs would probably end up draped across your lap.) Good luck.

Aww, thats cute! (at work).

Ill try that pillow trick of yours. It may work, but Sammy likes to do things her own way and doesn't take kindly to people forcing her to sit a certain way. We'll see...

p.s. why so serious?

If by "serious" you're referring to the last Jake pic (Batdawg), he's only being serious in a simple-minded way. He's big-time into lights, reflections, moving shadows, etc. He'll chase the beam of a flashlight or laser pointer more or less non-stop (til your arm gets tired). He runs across the lawn chasing the shadows of flying birds, barking like a crazy dog.

In keeping with this silliness, he's noted that shiny things sometimes create reflections that are fun to chase. I think in the Batdawg pic the camera, being metallic and, therefore, at least potentially reflective, got his undivided attention. THAT'S why he seems so focused. My technician at work has a cell phone which reflects sunlight nicely. Anytime she pulls it out, he follows her around waiting for some action.

He's kind of a funny dog.

I haven't had Bear in the Boxster, but when he rides in the IS, he gets to stay in a $20 nylon kennel from Target. He loves it, plus it keeps him (and his hair) contained.
You might be able to fit that in the front seat of a Boxster... keeps the dog low and if you were to get in a wreck, more safe than just laying on the seat (the kennel has seatbelt loops).

fragdude 07-25-2008 10:51 AM

That sounds like a really good idea! but unfortunately after looking at the dimensions of the kennel I don't think Sammy will fit in it...

Insite, I love animals and purchased the wallaby from a breeder close to San Antonio. I live in a warm climate just south of Dallas, TX, but they actually prefer a cooler climate being from Australia/New Zealand as they have snowy winters there. They make great pets and are pretty hardy as long as you take care of them. However, if you neglect something, they can die very quickly and most vets down here don't know how to probably care for them, however, there are some great books that need to be studied in advance and then you can basically tell your vet what to order, how to treat, etc. . Their lifespan is approximately 12 years in captivity. As a baby, you have to bottle feed them at regularly occuring intervals with a special milk formula imported from Australia, this is the time period where you develop a bond with them that will last forever as they consider you their "mother". As they grow older, they live on grasses, and commercial wallaby diet. (kind of like dog food, but it's a special formulation) Purina markets it under it's exotic brand Mazuri Kangaroo and Wallaby Diet. They are friendly if hand raised, although most are kinda shy. Mine is named Irwin and he will hop up to me and every member of my family every time we are in the backyard, but if strangers are around, he will keep his distance as you have to earn their trust. They will occasionally nip like a puppy, but you know when its coming so it's not a big deal. Their worst habit is boxing and as they get bigger, they get stronger, and it's definitely something you want to nip in the bud and break them of. When they are small, it's cute, but when they are large, it hurts if they hit you right. Typically if you neuter a male early enough, then they don't develop boxing, but then you can't use it as a stud either.

I definitely recommend them as pets. They are a joy to watch and very curious albeit shy creatures. Also, they stay a manageable size in comparison to a Red Kangaroo so even if they act up, you can still be safe and not get hurt too bad. If you get a larger species of Kangaroo, they can hurt you pretty bad if you aren't careful, they are very powerful creatures.

LoveBunny,

Thanks, a wallaby is a small marsupial. They are basically small kangaroo's.
