Oil type
Hi all,
I think I have an easy question which I am sure has been asked several times. What type of oil do you all use. I have a 1998. I have always used Mobil 1. The owners manual suggests 10W-40. I once read here that someone was using 0W-30. I thought that was a typo till I saw some today. I drive only in the Summer so it's usually always warm. Any suggestions ? Thanks, Mark |
I would only use the recommended oil and make sure it is the ECEA approved Mobil 1. There is more than one type of Mobil 1.
What are you going to gain with 0W30? |
Not looking to gain anything......Just wanted some info on what other Boxster folks use and why.

I don't have the link, but I was looking through the PCA tech Q&A and there was a post there. It said that Porsche now recomeneds only Mobile 1 0w-40 for all season for all their cars with boxsers back to 73(?). Def. for the boxsters though. I went to a porsche shop near me and they said the same thing (about the boxsters, I'm not sure about the year, but it makes sense becuase thats when they switched from mechanical fuel injection to Bosch CIS).
Hopefully this helps. Ill look for the link |
found it:

oil
mobile 1 ow 50
|
Interesting read....Thanks for the info.
|
Mobil 1
Ow40 here ... |
I use Redline 5W40.
FYI- The only Porsche approved 5W50 oil is Mobil 1 (but is has a lower HTHS than Mobil One 0W40). Here is a great read about oils: http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html |
For now I'm stickin with what porsche recommends. Although the fact that its strictly mobile 1 is odd..

In fact, the PCA data in that link is already outdated, since we now know that 5W50 is also approved (true, in this cass that only Mobil One is). Here is a good older thread about oil. In there is a link to Porsche's multi page list of approved oil suppliers. http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17088 :) :) :) |
ahhh, this whole oil business is giving my a head ache...I think I should just dig a whole and stick my head in it...let someone else change my oil....
|
factory fill Ow40 here. I wouldn't recammend 30 weight especially if you drive in warmer climes. Just stick with 0w40.
|
Yes, do M1 0-40 or Red Line 5-40.
Both are great oils. Stay away from 30 W oil unless you live in Sweden or Norway. |
I did 9.5 quarts of M1 0W40 this morning. New filter, drain plug, and washer. Cannged the air filter while waiting for the oil to drain. Pretty straight forward task.
