Price check on 2003 Boxster
Hi all. I was pointed to this site from the FChat board for some information on buying a Boxster.
My brother is currently looking to buy a 2003 model in Baton Rouge that we test drove today. The car looks nice and drove very well, no curb rash on the wheels and the interior is top notch. The only cosmetic blemishes I found were the clear coat is pealing on both rear view mirrors and the 'Boxster, emblem on the trunk has the top part of the 'B' broken off. This is a dealer selling the car and with a 2 year or 50K mile complete warranty. They are asking 29,995 for it with 21K miles. Here's the car: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNum ber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage= 0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending& certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7cE-%7cM-_41_%7cD-_391_%7cN-N%7cR-150%7cI-1%7cP-PRICE+descending%7cQ-descending%7cZ-70454&aff=national&paId=277231830&recnum=4&leadExi sts=true Seems a bit high to me, but supposing they respray/fix the mirrors and the emblem, what would be a fair price for this car? Also, what are some of the 'Boxster specific' things that he should be looking for? I hate coming on here and sounding completely clueless, but I really know nothing about P-cars. P.S. the car was a blast to drive! |
price check on an 03 boxster
dmaury,
there's numerous sites in the forum if you want to do your own research. one very helpful one is by Mike Focke... with the one you are looking at, for the asking price . There's a lot more better one than that and maybe even going with an "S" model. read on and you will be more educated and armed with what to look for , including PPI, good options and things to look for.. at this price range i would not settle for anything but original paint all over. good luck with your search. |
Its got an automatic. Unless you have a physical problem that prevents you from shifting manually, do not buy an automatic Boxster. Nothing particularly wrong with a Tiptronic tranny but its a sports car for f**k's sake.

"Seems a bit high to me..." Posted by DMaury. Seems a bit high to me, too, though I'll admit to being lazy and not doing any research before posting this. I got mine almost exactly two years ago (a 2001 Boxster S, making both cars the same age when purchased used). Paid about 3 grand more than they're asking for the one you're looking at (and from what I've read on this forum since then, have come to realize I paid too much). But mine's an 'S' with litronics, 6 CD changer, 19K miles, etc. AND---it's more of a buyer's market today than it was when I got mine. |
I just bought by 03 last week. It has 36K miles and has no issues. I paid 25k for it and thought it a fair price. The warranty is work at least $2,500 but I would say your price is still a little high. Don't over pay, but buy one. My face is hurting from the smile that won't leave my face.

I also got an 03S for 25K a few months back. The warranty is worth some money, but for under 30K you can get an 03S with similar mileage at a dealer. As to a tip or std, that is your choice. I got a tip.
In my humble opinion it is about 5-7K too much based on what is out there. |
$25k must be about the target number. I picked up my 03 S a few months back for that. I had a PPI and everything check out perfect. I would say wait until you find exactly what you want. I drove black 03 S with 19's and I wanted it immediately, but it was listed at $29k and had a little wear and tear. I waited until I found a car that was spotless in and out and that I could get the best deal possible on. I could not be happier!

In my opinion, price depends on your location. You can see a 10% price fluctuation easily when you compare two different places i.e. NYC and Charlotte, NC.
Around me (NYC), dealers have no problem asking for 30k+ for a '03 boxster with up to 35k miles. Mind you, the 03 boxster is when they had the face lift and minor engine changes. So if you want an easy way to find a cheaper boxster you could try looking for an 02 with equal millage. This is just my opinion as I've noticed over the years through the dealer auctions I go to buy cars (I'm not a dealer, but I know a few). |
Look around
Keep a eye out for private sales. I just paid 19 grand for a2003 black boxster. I knew I had to do the RMS and tires, and clutch kit. But for a total of 23 into it, I think i'm still way ahead of the game.
