2000 boxster s questions?

Thinking of buying an 00s to get back into a boxster. Car has only 27k miles. Anything on the 00 to look out for? I know about the rms stuff as I had that on my 97 but what about the worst IMS? also what warranty companies are out there I can use on a private party purchase? thanks... hoping to get back in the boxster family!! :)

An '00 with 27k miles sounds good to me, depending on the price. I know a lot of people with suggest getting an '03, but the changes are worth the extra cost in my opinion. Especially when you can add a glass top to any 986. There's nothing wrong with older Boxster's.

For the warranty a few people have Warranty Direct extended coverage, and it is okay. Sometimes they cover you, other times they don't. I would get a good PPI and see if they have the service records, then shop around for a warranty. Just make sure to read the fine print. I saw one the other day for 6 years/100k miles but the fine print stated they only cover up to $3k per repair.

You don't really have to worry about IMS on pre-'01 Boxsters. It very rarely affects them, except for a few '00 built later in the year. Just check the door sticker for the build date.

I love my 2000 Boxster S. Bought it in 2004 with 23,195 miles on it. I now have 40, 380 . The only problem I've had was I needed to replace the left rear wheel bearing at about 30,000 which I thought was BS. But aside from that it's been a perfect car. Check out my pictures and post in Performance Talk about my DE event at Pocono raceway this past July 4th.

thanks rick....what should the build date be to be hopefully out of the ims?

Hi all...
I don't mean to hijack this thread but my 2000 S was built in October of 99.
Where does that fall in the IMS "worry" department?
Cheers
Mike

Mikes_box, all I know about IMS is that only a few later '00 where affected. I don't really know the specifics. Most '00 cars were probably built in '99 or early '00 because they would have been building the '01 later on. So you probably don't have to worry.

MikeM, you probably don't have to worry. It was only cars built in late '00+.

Thanks...as always.

I have an 00 S and am very happy with it. I bought it in Oct 2007 with 24K miles on it. Now have 31K on it ~8 months later. There have been a few issues that needed attention at a cost of about $2K including:

Four tires + alignment
30K mile service (spark plugs, oil change, all filters replaced, brake fluid flush)
Front motor mount
Both innner CV Joint Boots

I have a 2000 2.7l and a friend had a 2000 S (just sold it to another friend of ours) and both cars are great. Nothing to be scared of. Do the PPI and get the warranty record from the dealer (to see what work was done on the car) and you should be fine, especially at such low mileage.

I have a 2000 S I bought in May, 2007 with 16K miles on it. It now has 30K on it. I just got back from a 3200 mile road trip in it. No problems at all. I *love* this car.

With such low miles, I would also have the mechanic make sure to check all the seals and hoses. They tend to go bad if the car sits around a lot. I had a vacuum leak (from fluid crystalizing) the first week because the car hadn't been driven in so long when I bought it.

2000S at great car

I bought my 2000S with 21,300 miles on it. 10,000 miles later, no problems. 30K service and rear tires coming up this Fall.

Go for it!

Regards,

Mr. Mike

Great car

I bought my 99 built 00 acouple of years ago and it had 27K on it and now has 68K on it & have had very little problems. Only thing I had was engine hunting at idle due to carbon build up in the throttle body, which was easily fixed.

Also had to repace rear plastic window due to craking, but aside from that just normal servicing. It's a dream to drive and I love it everyday as it's my daily driver.

thanks for all the positive responses guys...funny thing is the car is actually a speed yellow and i see a couple you guys have the same color....

I bought my 00S in Feb 05 with 60,0xx miles on it. Now I've got 106,xxx. I've gone through several sets of tires, a couple of alignments, two years of Auto-X, oil changes every 7500 miles. As far as things needing to be done, the biggest has been replacing the 4 CV boots. It really wasn't that bad of a job. For the fun stuff, I've swapped the stock struts for coilovers, added headers and a cold air intake with an AEM dri-flo filter, modified the cats for better flow, and opened up the muffler for a bit more sound and flow. The car is one of the best purchases I've ever made.
