Replacement needed :(

Okay, so I sold of my Benz' (*must put the mo. payment into something that has a return like oil stocks or corn stocks) and the guy is coming to pick it up this weekend. I can't disclose the price coz' the transaction is not done yet. I give him my word :) If he back out of the deal, I'm $500 dollars positive than him and he knows that...hehehehe!

I got $4500 to spend for the car to use for picking up the kids, errands and so on but will not use for work as I commute already and doing my part to help the environment...not really for some of you after you see my 2 choices to pick up on Sunday after church if still available :D

I found these 2 on Craigslist and the asking price is $4999 (small local car dealer) and I will offer $4500 cash. Not check, money order or cashiers check but Benjamins....

You have lost your mind. Those cars are gas guzzlers. Buy a Toyota Corolla.

Yeah, the Mercedes --> cheap rice burner transition really sucks, but these big American V8's are gonna hurt your wallet far more than a Japanese economy car is going to wound your pride.

Now if I had to choose between the two, I'd take the Z28 because I wanted one real bad in high school. But that's when I had more hormones than brains.

unklekraker 06-24-2008 07:12 PM

That's exactly what she said when I told her what I'm getting...and yes, the pride is going to get hurt big time if I have to get a economical rice burner :(

but I forgot to mention that we also have 04' Lancer Bone Stock in the driveway

the Z28 is my first choice too

rick3000 06-24-2008 07:22 PM

If I was going to get a daily driver in the sub-$5k range I would look at a 914 or 944. But since you probably want something that is more reliable, I would look at a Toyota or a Honda, forget the Chevy and anything with a lot of miles unless you want to spend another few thousand on repairs.

unklekraker 06-24-2008 07:30 PM

Reliability..yes, I agree..Toyota or Honda  but i got Lancer already that's still holding strong.

Plase don't let my wife convince me to get a 01 Toyota Sienna that's loaded with all the options, 4 leather quad chair, 103k mi. for the same price...noooooooo :ah:

unklekraker 06-25-2008 06:22 AM

Nick, good find and low mileage too. That Benz' looks solid and clean, I might give them a call this week. Thanks, bro!

RandallNeighbour 06-25-2008 06:32 AM

You guys seem to forget all too quickly that 10+ year old MB's and BMW's develop suspension problems, transmission issues, interior pieces fall apart or off, etc. regardless of how well the previous owners cared for the car.

I will never again buy a German automobile without a bumper to bumper warranty on it.

I learned that lesson when I bought an 83 MB 300D in 1994 with 120k on it. Dumped 2k into the car the first six months I owned it and was headed straight to the shop to have the transmission replaced when I came to my senses and sold the car for $3k less than I paid for it. Whew! I only lost $5000 on that one.

Of course, as I type this I am thinking about the piles and piles of cash I spend on the Boxster and the situation is identical, but it's a big boy toy-hobby car, not a DD.

unklekraker 06-25-2008 06:39 AM

nick, I was going to send the owner an e-mail and see if I could look at it this weekend but then as I was reading the description..there's the dreaded word that says "small oil leak"

Randall, I didn't know that :o for all I know that the old benz are solid but probably they're older than MY90's and knowing that the only tools in my tool box are pliers, hammer and flashlight..I think my knowledge on fixing cars are way beyond worse...hehehehehe!

I still hope that the guy won't back out and the Z28 are still available this weekend ;)

RandallNeighbour 06-25-2008 06:52 AM

One day I will laugh in the face of the BMW and buy a brand new one or a CPO car, forcing them to repair their own car at their own expense for as long as I own it.

I'd love to buy a 2-3 year old 535 (twin turbo V6) but that turbo, which would probably go out within days of my 100k CPO warranty expiring, would cost me no less than $5k to replace and I don't know if I can stomach that.

yeah i woudlnt get a old benz uncle,

Randall i got a 535 as a loaner and it was a awesome car, VERY FAST.

ChrisZang 06-25-2008 08:21 AM

Gerry,

just adding my two cents here:
I hope you changed your mind already about the two Chevys you eyeballed earlier.
I personally would be embarrassed to be seen in either of them.
The Boxster is a lot about sophistication and understatement; these two monsters are not (in addition to them being gas guzzlers)

However if you don't mind a bit of a high gas bill, get something like this:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/car/727788916.html

unklekraker 06-25-2008 08:31 AM

Hey Chris...what's happening! I haven't seen you in awhile
I'm not replacing the Boxster..no way!

I've always love the sound of V8's esp. on Camaro's, use to own 3 trucks b4 selling them to get the house and i miss driving a V8's and the sound of it :(

ChrisZang 06-25-2008 09:36 AM

Hi Gerry,

thanks for asking, look at the bottom of my signature :(

I hope I have the car (finally) back before 4th of July

I did a similar search recently. Found some immacualte Volvo's. Look like they were sitting in the garage for years. Their engines last hundreds of thousands of miles. Our family had two, built like tanks with nice leather, sun roof etc.
Allot of people never consider these cars so the demmand is low which is good.

p.s.
EXCELLENT decision on buying some stocks. Just bought some today.
I'm not sure if you have your 401K and IRA funded yet (should do that first) but the agriculture stocks are the way to go. Potash just raised prices 90% and there no shortage of demmand for their fertilizers. Agrium, Mosaic and Titan are other good names. As far as oil and gas take a look at the UNG, USO if you don't want to buy individual stocks and want the ETF route, oceaneering for the deep sea drillers, National Oilwell Varco, Petrohawk and weahterford. Food and Energy are going to be very expensive in 10 years. This could be the Microsoft stock we all missed.

Yeah i agree with you on the benz... Especially if its disel, then the engine itself is considered an oil leak lol.. Plus those older benz's always have suspension problem, I remember replacing the front ball joints on them and my god was a b*&tch it was to get the new ball joint pressed in.

CJ_Boxster 06-25-2008 10:24 AM

I push for a 1967 or 1968 (safer) Ford Mustang, 289 or 302... with power front disc brakes!

unklekraker 06-25-2008 10:58 AM

PL..thanks for all that info. My noggin's are a bit rusty when it comes to finances. I can't even balance my check...that's how bad it is :o
When you get a chance, can you PM me on how to get started on stocks and the company you mentioned, like how much money do I need and all the stuff that the amateur needs to know, if you don't mind :) Thanks!

CJ, I will look into the model year you suggested..thanks, bro!

racer_d 06-25-2008 11:20 AM

If its "fee money to burn" how about a Porsche 944?

yah, I thought about it but, I'm not a mechanically knowledgeable guy...I'm more of a "Get In, Drive it like you stole it, Wash car every other weekend, Wax it seasonally" type of a car owner :D

CJ, those cars, most of them are way out of my budget although they are classic according to Auto Trader.

Finances and investing are two different things. I'm pretty good at investing and uh not so good at managing my expenses and bills. If I wasn't good at investing and trading I might be in poor house. While on the other hand some people I know are very good at managing their finances and are TERRIBLE at investing their savings.
You should talk to a certified financial planner or contact Vanguard and tell you want to set up a monthly investment account and an IRA or ROTH if you don't already have one.

NickCats 06-26-2008 05:48 AM

Gerry,

Here's another suggestion :

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=246025434&dealer_id=9434025&ca r_year=1999&model=&num_records=25&systime=&make2=& start_year=1996&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&keywords rep=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&f uel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=25&marke tZipError=false&search_lang=en&sownerid=613571&mak e=ACURA&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=fin dacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default _sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_typ e=priceDESC&address=94583&advanced=y&end_year=2009 &doors=&transmission=&max_price=5000&cardist=14

Looks pretty nice. Not sure if I would buy a car with 189k miles though ( even if it is an Acura )...

i'm just reminiscing the days when most of my relatives drive that kind of van :)
