Know of a great looking shift knob?
 

I've currently got the nice stock leather / alum one (for 6 spd)...looking for something like an alum round ball type. I'm thinking of doing this with a B&M short shifter upgrade. And would someone be interested in buying mine if I find a nice replacement one?

This one is almost free.

were you doing a short shifter upgrade?
I'm thinking of doing it (found a new B&M for $214) yesterday (the site says they have 10 in stock at that price, if anyone's interested).
And the lemon really goes better with you interior.

Our local group has put in many B&M shifts. You can find them new on ebay for $199. There is a C4S guy who has a used one for $100.

should I buy a used one? seems the extra $100 would be worth it for a new one.
Do you know anyone who'd do the install for me? / do you think it's a worthwhile upgrade?

I'm sure toolpants has a belief one way or another, but I found some interesting stuff on the Porsche website concerning short shifters. They tech guy said:

"The shorter throws will not shave that much time off your shifts and they will always be harder to make after conversion (more effort on the part of the driver) because the shifter mechanism must do the same amount of work with less movement. Unless you're planning to race your Porsche, keep the standard shifter and simply learn how to make good, smooth shifts."

It made some good sense to me. Toolpants, you've installed a bunch of them... do you think it takes more effort to shift with a short shifter and is it more for show or go for the non-track boxster driver?

It does take more effort. That is a trade-off. There is nothing free in life.

This is my poor example which I have repeated.

Swing a baseball bat with your hands at the end of the bat. Then choke up for a bunt. If you want to hit the ball out of the park with the same swing force...

The shift is just a lever, like that bat.

I do not have a short shift on my car, but I have put in a few dozen on local Boxsters/996s.

I suggest you try a car that has one. Then see if you like it.

To each his own - put in a B&M two months ago - about 1.5 hours - like the more positive feel. Would not go back!
