34, bought it new when I was 32....I've had more to love since I was in preschool so it really has nothing to do with the aging process....

so I played HS football....our star RB went on to play College Ball fell short of the pros.....guy was built like a specimen...

dropped dead in the hallway of his condo complex at about 31.....really got me thinking that I should enjoy my time here.....enter boxster

bmx672 04-28-2008 04:12 PM

I bought my 2000 last year at 38. I had a 944 Turbo for a couple years before that to get my feet wet.

I love my plates "PSHN 40" But I'll need to change them next year to "PSHN 45" haha.

I have the same feelings as super66 about life... I don't want to be 70 thinking, "man, I shoulda woulda coulda"

kyle986driver 04-28-2008 04:18 PM

Im 18..and I guess i live up to the stereotype of moding my car in anyway I can..seats,exhaust, intake, shifter, paint this, paint that, fix this, fix that, stereo, speakers, yada yada yada

eqs 04-28-2008 04:29 PM

Yep bmx672 and Super66, my sentiments too. Enjoy the Pcar now while you can still shift gears and enjoy the flat 6 like Dr P designed.

Cheers :)

PSL-Boxster 04-28-2008 05:12 PM

im one of the younger members of this forum -- just turned 18 in feb.

gmboxster 04-28-2008 06:43 PM

I absolutely hate that expression 'midlife crisis'. My decision to get a boxster had nothing to do with age. I thought , life is tooo short. After years of saving and being responsible I came to the conclusion that our time here is so short you have to enjoy it. If not now , then WHEN ? BTW I'm 50 and workout regularly. I bet I could run circles around %90 of today's teenagers and their 'couch potato behavior'. Enjoy your boxster, father time catches up with ALL of us.

6speed 04-28-2008 07:18 PM

Im 27 . The reason I got mine was simple ..... Reaserch... I finally found a car that 1. was affordable [kinda}
2. Great handling [one of the best]
3. It looks great!
4. Sounds awsome
5. Did i mention fast!
6 Lots of storage
you know I could go on and on!

The others I was Reaserching were the s2000 ,Bmw M roadster 98- 2000, And 350z coupe, the z roadster looks horrible!!

Heres what i bought....

jonnycool 04-28-2008 08:09 PM

i can't understand how you 18-20 year olds can afford the insurance on this type of car?!?! in the UK if an 18 year old who was actually able to get insurance for it would cost him around $10000-$15000....i'm not joking, a 1000cc car would cost you $1000, our boxster cost $1000 for me and the wife and we've turned 40

Jeph 04-28-2008 09:11 PM

I got the Boxster at 27. I'm 30.

Hmm, I wanna play this game:
4 - Some sorta pedal powered tractor (red)
5 - Dukes of Hazzard Big Wheel
6 - Knight Rider Big Wheel
7 - Huffy Sigma (that bad boy had hubcaps!)
12 - GT Pro Performer (that's not true, but it's what I wanted -same for the Sigma too)
14 - Mongoose (gray)
16 - '89 Nissan Maxima (parent's -I was so cool with the windows down blaring "WHOOMP! THERE IT IS)
17 - '84 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (parent's)
18 - '94 Mitsubishi 3000GT (parent's -got my first date by this time -Nothing impresses more than a 3KGT and dinner @ Cracker Barrel)
20 - '89 Nissan Maxima (officially mine this time)
24 - '94 Ford Probe GT (first car I bought -still have it)
27 - +'00 Boxster (still have it)
29 - +'96 Acura TL (current daily driver)

6speed 04-28-2008 09:20 PM

I just turned 22 on the 27th...Got the Box about 2 months ago!

16 - '92 Saturn SL1
18 - '03 Dodge Neon SXT
21 - '05 Kawasaki Ninja 636 (first vehicle I purchased)
21 - '97 Porsche Boxster (2nd vehicle I purchased)

YellowJacket 04-29-2008 09:07 AM

Fun game. I'm 26. While I can't yet claim anything Italian or otherwise exotic, I'm working to ensure that my list stays respectable (I had a slight indiscretion at 21 years old, but I've since rectified the situation). Always paying cash for my cars has kept my list a lot more down to earth than it would otherwise be. :-)

16: 86 535i
18: 88 325ic
19: 93 325i
20: 95 M3
21: 03 Jetta
22: 97 Box

I don't see why it's relevant whether a person drives a Boxster at 25 or 55. Very few people that I've ever known are in a position that they absolutely COULD NOT afford a new Box/911. So, it's more about priorities, which shift back and forth through one's life. When I was in high school and college, my car was my biggest concern. Now that newly I'm married, I focus a lot of money on paying off my house, travel, and saving for retirement; hence, I haven't bought a new car in 4 years (which as you can see is quite out of character for me). I can guarantee that once my wife and I pay off our house in a few years, I'll be buying another toy. May be a 911, may be a new Chris Craft, maybe an island house on Lake Winnipesauke. Regardless, at some point in my life, I'll spend significantly more on another impractical toy car with no roof, and to say "oh, he just owns that because he's XX years old" would be grossly inaccurate.

Well my insurance is even less than alot of people I know, I get an insurance discount for having a good GPA in school, as well as doing countless cost-reducing classes and videos. Plus my record is clean...

thomschoon 04-29-2008 05:11 PM

OFB, Old Fat & Bald, been fifty for a couple of years, no mid-life crisis just ongoing immaturity. Owned my first P-car at 21, several since, have a 986 because it was a sunny friday and it was yellow, been dying on the depreciation curve since. For fun I drive my 911, for work I use the 986, they are all just cars.

I just got my bill from my insurance company with my premium readjusted after I added my Boxster. It seems to have gone up at least $50/month. I'm 35 years old, no at-fault accidents ever, been with State Farm since I was 15, and I don't think there are any tickets still on my record at all. This is the most my insurance has gone up for any car I've ever owned. I don't think it was even this high when I had two cars before (Explorer and Lexus SUV). Guess this one's just in a higher risk class or something. I know it's worth more, but come on, not that much more!

TriGem2k 04-29-2008 05:48 PM

16 years old, Brand New Boxster, my insurance premium was $650/MONTH!!!!!

6.5 years later, Same Boxster, my insurance premium is $175/Month!

Talk about being raped monthly :ah:

LoveBunny 04-29-2008 06:07 PM

$650!!! Dang, that's steep! But now my insurance is higher than yours I think and I'm a lot older. Ridiculous. I'm sure our insurance in general is just higher here though.

gmboxster 04-29-2008 06:15 PM

Come on people , time to change insurance carriers. I pay roughly $250/ 6 months. Yes thats / 6 months. I do have completely clean driving record however.

LoveBunny 04-29-2008 06:41 PM

You pay $250 every six months?!? Did I read that correctly?

Mine is $1,370.22 every six months. That's with multiline discount, antitheft discount, vehicle safety discount, and accident-free discount.

But then I live in New Orleans where someone was mugged at 9:00 a.m. about a block from where I live by thieves driving a stolen car.

I know, it's sad. I still drive it too! It keeps me busy though -I always work on it (because it breaks all the time). It's not so much a matter of keeping it running as it is keeping my mind/hands busy. It's a project to me -something to mess with when I'm bored. Believe it or not, I'm finished with any and all mods to the Boxster, so this is what I do.

Haha, Dr. Leo Marvin.
(Please tell me some one gets that reference.)

ISUnorth 04-29-2008 08:40 PM

Do the math

Truman was president when I was born. :)

Bought an '02 Boxster about a month ago. Been looking at them for a year or so and decided to grab one before I am too old to really enjoy it! Have a '04 A4 and a '94 Miata (which I need to sell). The insurance on the Boxster is about the same as the A4.

First auto I ever owned was a '68 MGB (BRG with wire wheels) back in college not counting the blue Champion pedal car back in the day. And, yea, I still have the Champion.

BTW, first post here. Been browsing a little to learn more about this fun trouble mobile I now have.

Who cares how old we are?

I believe we are all on this forum because we have a passion for performance cars in general and P-cars in particular. I bought mine last year when I was 38. It was not a mid-life crisis car. I always wanted a well made, beautiful and superbly handling high performance car. However, until last year, I had more pressing concerns. Ridiculous school loans, mortgage, kids, retirement, food.... etc. etc. When I felt that finally I could slow down a little from my work and have my finances under control... I bought it. Everytime I sit in it, instant smile.

Lil Bastard - No wonder you know so much about cars. Your list of cars just goes on and on. How did you afford them all? You seem to be a hands on guy and not a silver spoon inheritance guy. Just curious.

mchi5 - gotta be careful my man. Interesting thread but remember, life goes by pretty fast. Guys you think that are old and past their prime will be you soon enough. My good friend who races motorcycles is in his late 40's and he is in better shape than I ever was in my early 20's.

Oh, come on! You put off getting your Boxster because you just wanted to eat? You've got to make sacrifices. I eat only ramen and live in my parents' house. (Just kidding.)

But seriously, we do get "old" before we know it. I used to look at guys that were in their 40s or 50s and think they were old farts. Now I often look at them and wonder if they are single. Guess they aren't old farts anymore. Scary how fast lift flies by.

And btw, I had a 944 when I was 16, so I guess if the Boxster had been out I'd have had that instead. I ended up having to sell it when I moved away and no longer had my dad to help me maintain it. I always wanted another P-car but never had the opportunity until now.

Gary in BR 05-01-2008 09:58 AM

I was 30 when I bought my Boxsters and i've had it for 6 years.

Oh, no, no, no ;) ....my challenge is not the number of cars. You've got a list of memorable cars there CJ. My challenge is "who can top my list of crappy automobiles?". Aside from my Boxster (of course), my wifes VW Beetle and my Karmann Ghia T34 I have some real gems there (in comparison). I mean who else here has had the pleasure of commanding the power of a 1987 Hyundai Excel? It boasted a screaming 90 hp and whenever I got out of the car I'd have to unhook the battery or the engine fan would continue to run and drain it. Can't tell you how many times that POS left me stranded.

But I don't want to hijack this thread :) Let's just say I REALLY REALLY appreciate my Boxster.

I think the '89 Jaguar I had could challenge your Hyundai Excel as far as leaving me stranded or otherwise driving me insane. That car had electrical problems and was possessed by the devil. I think I kept it a total of six months.

TimAustinW 05-03-2008 10:43 AM

That sucks. I bet you were really excited when you first got the Jag. At least you were stranded in style ;)
