DIY 15k service???

I want to do the 15k service my self. I saw this kit on ebay. Is it a good deal or can I buy the parts for cheaper at my local Porsche dealer?

$120
It includes
1 - Air Filter

1 - Pollen Filter

1 - Oil Filter Kit

1 - Oil Drain Plug Seal

1 - Oil Filter Wrench

Do you need this wrench??

If you shop on E-Bay you can do it for about $50.00.

No, you do not need the wrench, if you buy a Kragen strap wrench [$10.00 for two] you can make it work.

Believe it or not Fram makes the oil filter for us. The O ring is not a special Porsche O ring, it's an O ring. The crush ring I won't even discuss [$.25 to $1.00].

You can buy O rings at any Napa, or if you can find it at Harbor Freight for million zillion O rings for few bucks.

Call Kragen and check there prices.

I have not seen an aftermarket oil filter. At one auto parts store last year, Autozone or Kragens, I saw a listing in the filter catalog for a Boxster but there was nothing on the shelf.

The filter sold by Porsche is made by Mahle, it even has the Mahle part number on it. But Porsche adds it's 996 part number and removes the Mahle name.

It was a special order through Fram, I have a ton of filters so I did not pursue it.

It was about the same price as a "Porsche" Mahle filter.

Come to think of it... he said they had STP filters on the shelf for it.

If you are a filter nut then look here.

http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

A filter company usually wants to have a complete line of filters. If it is for a car that they do not make a filter for then they rebrand it, and sell it as their filter when in fact it is made by another company. Just like Porsche does.

No clue if this is going on with a Boxster filter.
