Lift bars to jack up a Boxter/Need a Portland, Oregon Volunteer
I have been investigating jack pads and such as I wait for delivery of an '08 Boxster S. I stumbled across a site where a fellow makes what he calls liftbars for raising one side of a 928. It certainly looks like an excellent way to jack up a side of the vehicle and be able to place jack stands in a good location.
I contacted him and asked if these would work on a Boxster or if he made these for a Boxster and he replied that they would not work on a Boxster but he was interested in potentially making them for a Boxster but needed a subject to do measurements and to test the fit, etc. He lives in Portland, Oregon. If a Boxster owner in that area was interested in contacting him and doing this it may be a good product many would want. His website is www.liftbars.com and his name is Ken. You could contact him via e-mail through his web site. Check out his site. |
I put my car up on jack stands all the time. It's not quite as fast as the jack bars this guy makes, but then again, I don't put my car up on four jacks all that often and when I do, it only takes five minutes. Here's what I do.
1. Use a rear jack point to raise the car quite high and put a jack stand on the front jack point. Do the same thing on the other side. Now the front is up. 2. Locate the central jacking point under the engine and transmission area that brings the back up so jack stands can be placed in the back very easily. Voila. The car's up on jack stands all the way around. Note: A small piece of wood (a 3x3 piece of 1/2 inch plywood) works great on a race jack to raise the car at any of the five jack points. Or, if you live in the north where it snows all the time, buy a hockey puck (can't find one for the life of me here in Houston, Texas!) You may want to try doing this on your car when you get it before you spend money on specialized jacking bars you probably won't use every weekend, which would make them worth owning. Very cool concept though! That Ken's one smart feller. |

Car lift
Harbor Freight sells a similar item for $999.99

I don't know for a fact. But I have heard that Harbor Freight sells very low quality stuff. I'm not comfortable trusting my life to something like a car lift from Harbor Freight. For stuff like that I will galdly pay the extra money. Based I my life experience I believe you really do get what you pay for.

hi,
the lift I got is in between the $999 and the $1450 HF lifts in terms of lift height. I was aware of HF, but I don't have 220v. Also, Bendpak hdqtrs are a short drive away. They have a good reputation and I feel more comfy in regards to warranty and parts than with HF. Also, purhase price includes delivery of an assembled unit with a variety of lift adapters. So far, no regrets, wish I got it long ago. With my lowered box, I couldn't get a floor jack under it to do an oil change. the spoiler came with the car when I bought it last year. I'm actually kinda iffy on that thing. |
