masking tape for preventing rock chips on track day
I've seen a few cars prepared for track days with (what looks like)
masking tape all over the front grill areas. Sometimes the tape is blue in color, but looks to be in large in width (e.g. 12 inches??). Can someone clue me in on what this product is, and where to obtain it? thanks, Dennis (new car = suddenly worried about rock chips) |
Painter's masking tape
Lowes/Home Depot Highly recommended for your orange "beautiful" |
Yes Painters tape - not masking tape. There is an important distinction there because the painters tape has a lower tac and will be easier to remove at the end of the day.
Some entrepreneur needs to come up with a way to sell this stuff in sheets! |
Right, the blue stuff has just enough 'stick' to stay on the car and save the paint.
i meant "masking" by cover up. not the masking tape that is the off white super sticky stuff. |
yup, its the blue tape.
what i find funny, is that people would take the car on the highway to the auto cross destination with nothing on it, and then put the blue tape while there....i mean cmon now, theres way more rocks that can fly up and hit ur car on the highway, than just you on the track...but ok, if that makes people sleep better at night. i took my car to several autocross events, and trough 2 winters in chicago, and all i got is 2 tiny rock chips to show for it, none that came from autocross |
Good info -- thanks.
Re: more rocks on the road vs. on the track: might be the case, but I'm trying to avoid all the "marble marks" too. Unlike most autocross venues I've been on, the full size tracks typically have lots of rubber bits flying around at high speeds. |
those darn blue rolls are expensive!
p.s. If you have one of those magnetic numbers for your doors, place the blue tape under the numbers. A pesticide sprayer filled with water (obviously) from Home Despot also works to clean off the tires between laps. |

My guess is somewhere between $400-1000 depending on how much surface area you want to cover |
