Autocross That Boxster In DFW This Weekend!

Sorry for the late notice - and if this has already been posted - but local DFW Boxsters (and those willing to make the trip of course) can autocross your car at the PCA Maverick Region autocross this weekend on Sunday, March 30th, at Birdville Stadium parking lot in N. Richland Hills. You can get details at http://mav.pca.org/events/AX.asp - then this page will direct you to www.clubregistration.net to register and pay entry fees. As far as I know the registration will be open through March 29. The local DFW PCA region is the Maverick Region. If you're a PCA member the event entry fee cost is $25 - non-members $35. If you don't have a helmet you can borrow one from the club. If you've never autocrossed and need help getting started there are instructors who can ride with you for the first few laps to get you started. There are plenty of great people in Maverick region who would be glad to help you get started.

If you haven't autocrossed your car before I highly recommend that you give it a try. I bet you'll be back for more.

Ken

I think I'll be going to the one the following weekend at Pennington Field. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Hi Jeph - Wish you could make it for this one! My wife and I scrubbed off a lot of tire rubber two weekends ago on our Boxster at Mineral Wells at the Maverick Region autocross school. A very full and very fun day of instruction and practice! I like Mineral Wells for the size of that huge parking lot and the fast autocross courses that can be designed on it - but the distance out there and the brutal texture of the asphalt are the negatives. Pennington Field (and I hope Birdville Stadium) is quite a bit more gentle on tires but also much shorter/slower than the "MineralRing". I've heard that the available space on the Birdville Stadium lot is going to be a little bit larger than Pennington Field - so maybe a little bit longer course and possibly a little bit higher speeds. I compared a Google map satellite view of Pennington Field and Birdville Stadium and it looks like Birdville is a little bit bigger - but with widely spaced light poles which they will have to design the course around - which could possibly end up making it smaller after all.

Speaking with the Maverick region member in charge of locating space for the autocrosses, he mentioned we may be using the Ballpark in Arlington (or whatever it's called now) parking lot for a future autocross. I think he also said there will be more events out at Birdville Stadium too.

I may be able to make the Pennington Field event too but at this point it looks unlikely.

Hope to see you at one of them during the season though!

I will try to make it to NRH to watch, but not participate.

I want to participate in the Pennington event, but that will force me to get new tires just after the event. I'm not fired up about that. Plus I need an oil change. This event will turn out to be very costly for me. I guess we'll see what happens.

Oh come on Jeph - if you come out to watch you'll end up wishing you got there sooner so that you could run! I totally understand about the tires/costs/etc. but I really don't think that this parking lot (and lower speeds/shorter runs) is going to take off a lot of rubber - unless you're already at the point of having the inner cords of your tires show through.

Hope to see you and your car there - participating or not!

Hey Jeph - good to see you last Sunday! And thanks for the "on the spot" tutorial on how to remove the side vent cover and desnorkle my car! And no, I didn't really notice an increase in sound when driving my last six runs in the autocross but I could tell on the way home - and as I mentioned, maybe not so much more sound as just different sound - a different tone, possibly a resonance centered around a frequency that makes it seem louder.

Hope to see you out running in the autocross this Sunday at Pennington Field! I don't think you'll wear off as much tire rubber as you might think. And think of it this way, those autocross driving skills that you will be honing to a fine point could end up saving you and your car on our dangerous DFW streets and highways! Cost of a little bit of tire rubber well spent.

Great to meet you as well Ken!

It looks like I probably won't be able to make it Sunday. That's a shame because Pennington is a large parking lot -courses there are pretty fun. If I get the chance later in the afternoon, I may visit. But I was hoping I could run.
