after reading both i still dont get it...what do u do w the soldering iron? just make a hole?

Burg Boxster 01-03-2008 08:58 AM

Go in thru the bulb hole. Use the soldering iron to break up/melt the amber plastic piece so you can pull it/them out thru the bulb hole.

I've always wanted to do this mod but it sounds way to risky. One screw up and the lights are worthless. Wish someone could do it for me and warranty the work.

Maybe this one will help ya.

I did it a few months ago and love it too. How are the reflectors? Mine got coated in a thin haze of plastic smoke (soldering iron probably too hot) but it came off with some isopropal alcohol and a q-tip.

Perfectlap 01-03-2008 11:22 AM

yes that's an excellent mod. Proceed with the soldering iron carefully though...very easy to burn the sides of the plastic socket hole for the bulb.
Its a good idea to buy a short piece of metal tubing from Home Depot to sheath the soldering iron. Shop vac also comes in handy to suck out the broken bits of amber plastic that you miss with the needle nose pliers.

djomlas 01-03-2008 01:15 PM

i used 2 pliers and broke the pieces in 2...then since they are very flexible i just bent them in an oval kind of and pulled them out, so i didn't use the soldering iron at all.
no scratches and no haxing or anything...plus i bet even if you have scratches it wont affect anything since its smokes lenses and you cant see inside.

I did this a while back, as well. Used the solder iron to intially deform the amber, then used the needle nose pliers for the balance. No harm whatsoever to my headlamps.

It does look a lot better. I got to do it soon, the amber(yellow) is making my front turn signal "Greenish" :barf: since I am using blue bulbs. Got to do it before I get pull over.

You folks are still taking a hot soldering iron to a perfectly good set of expensive headlights, made of plastic, to get rid of an internal amber lense, that never bothered you....

I see links to my stuff and Henry's. My Boxstir "claim to fame" is to come up with the name "amberectomy." After I was banned from ppbb 7 years ago I registered on German and UK Boxster message boards.

Back then, on one of the German boards, there was a post about melting plastic with a soldering iron put into the headlight, or something like that. Since I do not read German I used a translator and could not figure out exactly what the Germans were doing. With the translator I could understand only about 1/3rd of the German words. And there were no pictures posted to shed any light on what they were doing with a soldering iron. :D

Then I met local Boxster owner Henry, who is Dutch, and Henry reads and speaks German, and figured out what the Germans were talking about. Then Henry did the operation on his own car. Then I introduced Henry to another local Boxster owner, Raman, who also wanted the operation. The pictures you see in the links are the ones I took of Dr. Henry doing the procedure on Raman's car.

The operations were a success, so I had to give it a name - amberectomy it was. Then the amberectomy procedure got picked up on the US Boxster boards.

All these years later Dr. Henry is still in practice. His last operation was a few months ago at a local work on cars days held at his house. This time the patient was a 996 owner, and the owner's back is in the picture. I told him not to look while Dr. Henry operated.

And that is the amberectomy history, if anyone cares. Prior to that I coined the term "cupholderectomy," but that is another story.

That's a great story. Now get the translator widget. I have it on my Mac and it;s great for translating forein web sites.

djomlas 01-03-2008 09:03 PM

why did you get banned from ppbb?
