Small "Oops" - Need to Remove Velcro From Dash
Hello Everyone,
The title says it all: I need some suggestions for removing a strip of velcro I put on my dash. I initially bought some velcro strips from the hardware store to mount my radar detector on the dash instead of the windshield due to suction cup failure. I don't need/use the detector much anymore and would like to remove this stuff. However, I am not sure how to do it or how to safely approach this without screwing up my dash. Got any advice/tips for this removal? (pics below) http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5606/dsc01960et1.jpg Close Up: http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/223/dsc01961sr4.jpg Thanks! :) |
Don't know if it's the same kind of adhesive or not, but if I were in your shoes I'd try the same technique used for removing the airbag warning stickers on the visors. I would think it would be safe on the dash, and seems like the least aggressive approach. (It won't just peel off?) If you're interested, check out:

I'd have a damp rag ready---soon as it comes off, wipe it down to remove the solvent. I think it'd be safe, but as they say, you could always try applying a little in an "inconspicuous area" to test how the dash material reacts. |
Goo-Gone/Goof-Off or Bug and Tar remover work nicely.

I would soak in some water and goo-gone then peal it off, if it won't just peel off without to much force. Then use some more goo-gone to remove any residue and then use leather conditioner to restore the dash.
Good Luck! |
If the velcro won't come off easily, you can heat it a bit with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive. Be careful though, they get pretty hot. Then you can use Goof Off as the guys suggested, or rubbing alcohol will work as well.

yeah you want to heat it up with a heairdryer one way or another, it will make things easier from the get go.
then follow it up with some goo gone and call it a day |

This is the best advice. A hair dryer works wonders. |
