Anyone know a source for factory man. trans. oil?
 
Dealer wants $579 for 20 liters and doesn't have a smaller quantity. This must be designed to discourage do it yourselfers?

Anyway, does anyone know where I can buy it by the liter? I tried redline 75W90NS and cold shifting is better but it is too notchy in all gears (6 speed).

How long has the new tranny oil been in there for? Give it a couple hundred miles to break in. Have you considered Swepco tranny oil?

Wow, that's crazy - 20 liters! I tried Castrol full synthetic but cold shifting is worse, in fact pretty bad. I plan on switching back to factory. My understanding is that the factory oil is Mobil 1 75W90. If that's the case, then you can find it a Kragen's, NAPA, Car Quest, any of the chain auto parts stores. I couldn't find enough in my area though and so used the Castrol. If you're not in a hurry just call around and see who's got it.

The M1 would be my choice. About 10 bucks at Kragen.

Used redline MTL on a saab turbo 5 speed in the past and it made a night and day difference in shifting and the car only had 23k miles. In the boxster 6 speed though, I am not happy with the 75W90NS, it's too notchy. I know the 75W90NS is what redline recommends but I might give them a call and see what might work better.

Redline says the "cocktail" of 75W90NS + lightweight gear oil is no longer needed because the newer 75W90NS has the friction modifier (or whatever additive it is) that you used to get from the lightweight gear oil. But I am halfway tempted to try the cocktail because it would be easy to do. Just remove less than 1 quart of existing fluid and add 1 quart of the lightweight oil.

In theory, MTL (70W80 I believe) should be even more notchy than the 75W90NS but it sure did wonders for that saab (saab went from notchy to liquid smoth instantly). I am thinking I may try MTL via the pump method (saves labor of removing triangle plate on bottom) and if it doesn't work I am only out less than $30. For an experiment that would be a bargain compared with big bucks to get dealer/indy mechanic to do a proper drain and fill. My guess is I will go back to the factory fill even if I do try the MTL experiment.
