looking for stats HP-overal weight-0-60 etc...
I am considering a Boxter and am interested in some statistic's to help me decide what to look for. As I look, it is clear that this car comes in various flavors... 2.5, 2.7, and 3.2... I dont remeber if I saw a 3.4. but I want to know what hp rating one could expect with the aformentioned engines. Also, what does a boxter weight? Generally speaking. What are you best 0-60 times. I want the push in the seat. Can any of you help with that info... Surely you guys can.
I would sure appreciate it. thx. -MS |
For the 2005-2006 Boxster 987:
Boxster 2,855 pounds 2,987 with Tip 2.7L 240 HP 0-60 5.9 sec manual 6.8 Tip Boxster S 2,965 pounds 3,053 with Tip 3.2 L 280 HP 0-60 5.2 sec 6.0 For the 2007-2008 Boxster 987 The Base went to 245 HP The Boxster S went to 295 HP |
I've got an'06 S with 280hp. It will push you back in the seat just fine. No problem scaring the living day lights out of you or killing yourself if you get stupid. I've done 0-60 faster than I ever want to again unless I decide that a heart attack is in order. It can be particularly exciting when the windy road home from work is miraculously open in front of you and you decide to see what the car can do racing into a corner with a slight bump on the right that moves the car and weight upward ever so slightly. Thank god for psm. Even more excitement comes when you're on the highway and realize if you push it you can pass the guy sitting in the left hand lane if you go around him on the right and you look at the speedometer to find you're doing 112mph.
You need to be very careful driving this car no matter what you're abilities whether you're on a winding road surrounded by trees or a highway. Any one of the Boxster models was built to be able to compete and win on the track. I'd look for the color and features you want in your price range. Generally starting with the 987 you would think there would be fewer of the mechanical problems that the earlier models had but who knows it's only into the '08 model year. |
I've got a '99 2.5L, 201HP, at 2755 lb. 0-60 in just under 6 seconds, which is plenty of power for me. The Boxster isn't really about straight line acceleration if that is what you're looking for, but it can outrun most cars on a twisty road. And it will throw your head into your seat if you don't tame the beast (even in a 2.5L).

mslayden,
I think this will answer your questions : http://www.weissach.net/986-987_RoadTestSummary.html Nick |
My 2.5 , best times were 5.5 and 5.9 6.1 to 60mph

MS, buy the newest boxster with the largest engine you can find.
3.2 is the minimum you should look at in my opinion... 3.4 would be better. While I'm enjoying the 2.5 with some HP and torque mods that put it just barely ahead of a 2.7, that extra power is wanted. No one ever said, "Geez, I wish I had bought the model with the smaller engine" :D |
Thanks...
Thanks guys. All of you. Nick that was a most thorough report. Exactly what I was looking for. I agree that straight line is more about 0-60 and the Boxster's forte is more about the twisties. But, power is power and I do love that. I just wanted to get a feel for the engine size while I try to compare to the price.... I have heard on more than one occasion that I should try to get newer the better. when did the 987 series start? I feel like I should focus on that one or newer. Generally speaking, what makes the difference in the 987 and can you tell by looking at it what generation it is?

Porsche said the 987 was 80% re-designed vs. the 986. Yes, you can visually tell the difference between the two, but you need to know what to look for. The biggest give-away are the side vents. The 987's are larger and triagular in shape. |

"My '97 base has a few modifications that allow it to do 0-60 in about 4.6 s" Posted by efahl. You got forced induction in that thing?? Can't IMAGINE how you'd be pulling THAT hard without it in a '97 base model... |
Eric, I'd like a complete list of mods you've made asap... how on earth are you getting sub 5 second times with "just a few" modifications? I need to do those few mods myself!
