Glove Box in the 986
 

Hey Guys,

I've seen some photos of the interiors of the 986 where there's a glove box in the dash on the passenger side. All I have is the compartment in the center console which holds no more than a pair of sunglasses. What year did they start putting in the glove box? It's gotta be 2003 or 2004. Is it possible to install them in an earlier model or is there a problem with the airbag being there? I've never seen these for sale anywhere.

I have been wondering the same thing ... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe even a Porsche Part No.? Either that, or has anyone used a glove box from a salvage yard (as far as finding one for a reasonable price)?

it was always an option, so any year could have it as much as i know.

glove box was added for '03 MY

And was standard. It was not available before that and was never an option.

The only way to add one is to replace the dashboard with one from a later model Boxster or Carrera.

Get a rear storage compartment. Lots more useful than the tiny glovebox they added for the '03 model year.

This the compartment that goes behind the seats? I have the Bose subwoofer unit. Won't that interfere with installing the rear storage compartment?

I have the BOSE subwoofer unit as well with the enclosed compartment. There is plenty of room and it doesn't interfere with anything. ;)

if you got the COMPLETE dash, you can swap it in....

Know where I can find the rear storage compartment? Didn't see any on Ebay.

Actually I just found this. This it? And it fits above or below the BOSE unit? I'd love to see a photo of both units installed if anyone has one handy.

Looking at this photo it looks like it's taking up the same space. Seems like it's either this or the BOSE

Griz, you effin' crack me up. You got a photo for every conceivable occasion.

As far as I know the glove box was added as a standard feature in 2003. You can only add it by replacing the dash, and I think that included the entire dash, because the upper and lower parts are different, it doesn't like that great a benefit for the cost.

I make due just fine with the center console, the door pockets, and I added a second shelf in the dash console. The second dash shelf that I replaced the CD shelf with, was one of the best thing's I've done to my Boxster and it was only $35. And you can fit more than sunglasses in the center console, I've got my wallet, cell charger, knife, and some random pens in there. I keep my sunglasses in the door pocket. There's plenty of room without a glove box.

Yep, I figured as much.

You know what they (those of our parents' generation, that is) say about 'idle hands.'

Now, if you have a dremel, I think you can actually make this work! Might not look too good when you are done however.

Yep, thats it. That's what mine looks like too. You can put a few things in there. The windscreen, the owners manual with all the other crap inside that leather pouch they give you(I removed the plastic holder under the steering column because it always hit my knees), some gloves, a compact umbrella maybe, important papers, insurance, etc.... :D

looking at the size of that so called glovebox, its really not worth $5.
but its weird that they didnt give us one, but rather made it as an option, along with the cupholders.
then again, i dont use cupholders at all, and can live w/o a glovebox.

That's the set-up my ('01) came with when purchased about a year and a half ago. It's nice to have, since we have so little storage space inside the car, but it's not very accessible when you are actually in the process of driving (esp a manual). I tend to store stuff I don't have to grab very often in there, because it's kinda awkward getting stuff in and out when you're shifting, steering, braking, etc. But I'm glad I have it. I've got my owners manual, a small flash light, some small Nikon binoculars and a couple of microfibre towels in there. It's kind of narrow...not much else will fit.

It wasn't an option. Not sure where you're getting this info from.

Maybe he's talking about the top shelf? That was an option later.

get a nice looking tool bag and put all your stuff in it and store it in one of the boots. The only thing you REALLY need in the cockpit are sunglasses and a debit card. Oh, I also need my garage door opener.

Don't waste your time with the glove box, My 996 has it and it's small and not worth the trouble of a dash swap for certain!
Unless you are really desperate for a place to put your gloves :)

You should do the garage door opener hack. I did it in mine, it works great, looks great and it's one less thing to have in the cockpit
