starter problem

My 2000 base (I hate that reference) w/ 42k miles suddenly has starter problems. Car/starter has always started/worked fine. Today, after car sat for about a week, I tried to start it but my hand slipped off the key so it was a very brief effort, but it was turning over. When I turned the key again, and each time since, the starter spins but does not engage the engine. All I get is the sound of the starter motor humming away. Ideas?

Do these things have solenoids like my Dodge truck? I've never ground the fly wheel or any such problem. TIA

Hello.
I had a similar problem with my 1997 Boxster on a ferry boat...
The starter was rebuilt for $120 and I also change the ignition switch ($20)
at the same time. These repairs solved my problem.
The starter or the switches are not a big deal to remove and they are
made with Bosh standard parts for solenoid and standard bendix.

Good luck.

Well if the starter is humming, that means its spinning (which it should do) but the gear isnt shooting out and grabbing onto the flywheel (which it needs to do).

Thats a common way that starters sometimes fail. You'll need to buy another... you can try getting one from a salvage yard to keep it cheap or call Suncoast Porsche, they are usually really good on prices when compared to other dealers.
