Next Boxster?

Anybody seen this yet? I found it on a non-English site, so I can't read the text, but it appears to be a 2010 or 2011 Boxster concept. If this is old news, forgive me. It's the first time I've seen it. I like the GT headlights.

They had a writeup and that pic posted in car and driver ( I think ) about a month ago. I will see if I can shake it up. I know someone on here posted the pics, I am not sure about the article.

It was in the November MotorTrend. There is a nice article on 986 Boxsters in it, and info on the, "Change Engine Light."

Found it. It was road and track. The article about the new one is scanned about halfway down. Search 2010 boxster here for more of the same pic you posted

Thanks Max,

I don't know how I missed the first thread.

It's a shame

the car keeps getting uglier every time they touch it.

It looks like a CGT sans the wing. Looks great, doubt Porsche will style it that similarly [keeping in mind concepts are in most cases lower and more striking than their production counterparts].

Different car

The original Boxster's body design integrates the lines of every element. It's lithe and tight. It's intricate, but it looks simple.

It seems to me that every subsequent "redesign" has been nothing more than an exercise in tacking on something inconsistent, such as the size or shape of an opening or an aerodynamic aid which interrupts the flow. As helpful as these may be for feeding air to a larger engine or when when the car is operated at the high end of its limits, they make the design less cohesive and coherent. As a former racer, I appreciate the functional effect, but, I think it's a shame that the clean elegance of the road car is lost.

The "new" Boxster is almost a complete departure from the original concept, with all the right boy racer cues and hints of Carerra GT lineage, making it look like it's a mini-exotic ready for the track, but to me it has lost nearly all the appeal of the original grand touring roadster.

Different strokes.

Different car.

simbob, you make excellent points.

But I still love the looks of this car and if I had the cash, I'd buy the first black on black one to hit US shores.

sweet momma that's a fine looking ride... and you're right, it's a poor man's CGT!

I looked at Grizzly's link and I am at a loss as to why he can't read that ;)

RandallNeighbor, your signature photo captures the roadster beauty that I love the looks of the Boxster for. The 2010 morphs too far from the roadster elements to be continued as a 'Boxster' model - imho.

I agree with Simbob's views.

Styling opinions are so subjective. There are many examples of the original design being the classic archetype for the series, and many add ons are just that, sometimes making a mishmash of the final product. In this instance, I believe that the newly proposed style is just that - new. It certainly borrows from some of the design cues from the original Boxster style, but in my opinion it looks fresh and unmistakably a Porsche. Bring it on; however, I am skeptical that it will be out as early as 2010.

Concerning styling, I am a big fan of the 986 over the 987, with just a few notable exceptions:

-I like the more sculpted nature of the 986 interior, but it does seem less flimsy in the 987.

-Hard to beat the 987 headlights for classic look and functionality.

-Rear spoiler on the 986 seems like a hack job.

I gotta say tho, I really like the look of the side intakes on that concept, it's the perfect blend of the out-of-place 987 and unflowing 986 intake.

9eighty6 12-05-2007 01:55 PM

I, for one don't mind the styling of the 2010. From Porsche's standpoint, they seem to like to tweak the design every few years to keep people coming back for the new model. I do know of some Boxster owners that will upgrade to the new model every two years, and in that sense it would only make sense to provide this customer base with new designs. I do agree, though, that it is pulling further away from the hisorical lineage of the 550 lines best exemplified in the 986/987 (with the exception of the 987 special edition 550 sypder). Granted the added hp would be pretty nice ...

Just my 2 cents ... I would rather see a re-design than see them eliminate the Boxster altogether. Let's not forget is has been around for almost 10+ years now ... Long live the Box!!

Simbob,
I am with you on this one. The original Boxter design is German understated elegance at its best. The 2010 concept is a little too boyracer for me. I guess I am a purist.

fatmike 12-05-2007 04:15 PM

Wow - anyone else notice that those wheels look like 22's?

RandallNeighbour 12-05-2007 05:21 PM

Mike, you're right! No wonder I like the look of that car in the photograph.

I bet I'd hate the ride if they really are 20's or larger.

rick3000 12-05-2007 05:24 PM

I wonder what it looks like with the stock 17" rims, they will end shipping most of them with?
