Wind deflector
 

Looks like my car doesnt have a wind deflector.

Exactally how much difference do they really make?

The stealer wants £400+ plus to fit one. Is it difficult to do myself, and is there an aftermarket one?

It does help. Are you sure the previous owner did not put it in the trunk or bonnet? Some people even put them behind the seats. Also you may want to check the inside storage compartment. No need to have the dealership install it. It's doesn't require installation, because it is meant to be removed. It just snaps into place. Are you also missing the roll bar windscreens inside the seat's head rest? You may want those to. But I prefer not to use them. They tend to make a whistling noise at high speeds. E-bay is you best place to find good prices. They even sell tinted ones(plastic wind deflector) on e-bay now. :cheers:

The windscreen does make a difference, but I cannt seem to get myself to use it much. To me, its like driving with the top down and the windows up. I do keep the rollbar inserts in all the time, but the windscreen stays in the trunk.

My sentiments mirror edevlin's. The wind deflector does help, but I don't like using it. The only time it gets put on is if the wife is in the car and we are on the expressway. Otherwise it stays in the trunk.

I leave the screens in all the time, I'd added soft velcro padding all around them where they make contact with the rollbars to keep them from making noise, I've also added some padding on top of the notch on the rollbar for the center screen to increase the pressure on the latches to reduce noise as well.... Nothing more annoying than rattles in the interior.

If you need the mounting hardware it is pretty easy DIY. You can buy the windscreen on eBay for about $100, on average.
I only use when the top is down, because with the top up it blocks the space above the truck, but is makes a very noticeable difference in wind noise. The only thing that isn't worth it are the black mesh inserts. They block your vision and don't reduce any noise.

The wind deflector helps if you want to go top down on cool days. Windows up deflector in, really keeps the heat in better. It is a must have for the ladies. Nothing puts a woman in a foul mood faster than showing up at a party with a hurricane Katrina hairstyle. On a warm day with just me in the car I take the deflector out and put it in the seat pocket. I like the wind in my hair.

How do the mesh inserts block your view? Unless you're 4ft tall and have the seats all the way forward the seat headrests fill 95% of the space within the roll bar. Personally I think the car looks better with them fitted, even if they don't actually do much to stop wind (I haven't driven without them so I can't confirm their non-effect). I'm not having a go here, so don't get me wrong. At 5' 9" I drive with both seats fully rearward so I have no experience of the mesh inserts blocking the view.

The mesh inserts may look better. but they do nothing to reducing wind noise (in my opinion). They are just another thing that can fall off of the car on the freeway.
My seats are normally positioned so that I can see out the opening in the roll bar, so I prefer to leave the mesh inserts out, to increase my visibility, and decrease my blind spot. It isn't a huge a problem, just a personal preference for function over looks. There have actually been some posts on this in the past, where a few other members agreed that they increase rearward visibility.

I'm 6.1" and I have to put my seat back as far as it will go, so for me the headrest would only smash into the mesh inserts. So I took them out for more leg room and a seat positioned as far back as I can get it. ;)

Boxster Mess Inserts
 

My Boxster is a 1998. I have a small black plastic pull tie on each of the black plastic roll bar inserts that hopefully will keep them from flying away if I hit a bump or something.

The one on the passenger side of my car is missing pieces. I believe over time the plastic becomes VERY brittle from baking in the sun for decades, if I accidentally hit the one on the passenger side more of the holes are broken off. I've thought of trying to cast them in aluminum or some kind of plastic, some kind of last wax method maybe, but haven't researched it much and I don't want to spend the outrageous price they'd want for a new replacement as each side is unique I believe and I don't want a "used" one because they are probably just as brittle as mine.

Anyone ever cut lexan to make the wind deflector?thr center one. Lowes sells the lexan and it should be about 30$ or so.I made as front window for my airstream out of it.easy to cut...

They're $133 at suncoast right now... seems a lot for what it is, but pretty cheap in the overall grand scheme of porsche ownership I'd say...

My Boxster only had a mesh insert on the driver's side when I bought it. The mystery of what happened to the passenger side insert was solved when I found its mangled remains at the bottom of the compartment that the convertible top folds into!

Although my Boxster had the mounting hardware installed it did not come with a lexan wind blocker. The used one I bought on e-Bay rattled so much that I rarely used it until I replaced the latches. Now it doesn't rattle at all.

Where did you find the latches and how difficult were they to replace?

The replacement latches (part number 986-61-737-01-01c left, 986-561-738-01-01c right) are readily available from most of the vendors and e-Bay too for that matter. Mine came from Pelican. The old ones just pop off, the new ones pop on. Easy peasy...
