How much is a new 2.5 engine worth?

Buying a boxster which comes with a new 2.5 engine. I would like to sell the engine but not sure what will be a good asking price.

Perhaps you shouldn't rush to sell the engine. Maybe the previous owner bought it for a reason he hasn't disclosed to you yet.
Also, it all depends on what people are willing to pay. Used 3.4L sell for about 10K, so I don't see anyone paying to much for a 2.5L even if it is new.

10k is way high for a used 3.4L. Most used 3.4s and 3.6's go for 6-8k on ebay from the major salvage yards.

A friend of mine paid $4k for a 996 3.4l motor. I don't know how strong the market is for a used 2.5 since a blown 2.5 is a great reason to upgrade to a bigger motor. Depending on mileage I would think $2-5K.

Are you sure the seller doesn't just mean that it has a new engine installed? When I was shopping for my car, one of the ones I was looking at had a relatively new 2.5 in it. That's not all that uncommon.

Yup, the previous owner who put the 3.4 in mine paid $7.5 for a 2001 with a mere 2.5k miles on it.

Your right 10K is way too high, I was think new engine replacement from an RMS failure, and replacement at the dealer.

I am sure there is a big difference of the cost between replacing an original 2.5 or upgrade to a 3.4. I called the dealer and they want $9800 for a new 2.5. I assume $6500 is reasonable for a NEW 2.5 if I sell it myself. No?

The major things going against selling the 2.5, no matter what condition, is that when someone's 2.5 blows, and they're going to spend thousands, they figure they might as well step up.

I'd say $5k would be a good range to try to get.
