whats with this gas cap

every time i fill up gas, i make sure that the gas cap clicks twice or so after i tighten it.
then get in, drive about 30 miles or so and the stupid CEL comes on, i get out, click it again, clear the light, and its fine again, doesnt come back.

same thing happens next time i get gas.
on the way to the train today, after filling up, came on again. SOB

how many times does the gas cap have to click?

happy motoring

Do you over-pump the gas?

Had this happen once -- where the CEL came on and the gas-cap was the presumed culprit. It lasted for about 2 days and hasn't come back. The dealer had mentioned that it might help if you do a "complete" fill -- versus just topping off. When do you refill?

make sure you get the Porsche cap if you replace.
I had to replace mine after the gas guy forgot to put it back on the car (we don't have self-serv here in NJ). Next day the CEL went on and I stoped by Pepboys and they gave me an aftermarket one. CEL kept coming on with the aftermarket cap.

DJ check your gas cap part #. I know the part has been recalled and maybe it wasn't done to your car(I don't know if this was the reason why it was called back).

How does a non self-serv gas station work out? Do you just pull up,give the gas pumperer your card and he does the rest?

^Carjackings? Hell, it cuts down on stolen gas!

Doesn't NJ also require police to be stationed at certain road construction work-sites? Or is that another east coast city?

In Texas we chose a slightly different solution to carjackings

Bingo.. just show up and someone else pumps it. It is nice to avoid smelly diesel on your own hands. Plus, NJ gas is "relatively" cheap, and even moreso if you take into account the full service benefit.

I think there was a TSB for the fuel cap and I've seen a few were the main seal on the cap cracked.

When getting gas in NJ, do you tip the attendant at the end?

In 1998 Porsche changed the emission system. The fuel tank is pressurized to check for leaks in all the plumbing. If the the sensor detects a loss of pressure or the sensor is defective then the check engine light comes on. If the O-ring seal on the cap is not sealing well then you can also get a check engine light.

For 1998 up to I forget what year, there was a recall to replace the orange O-ring with a black one.

Then there was another recall for 1998 to I think 2001 to replace the cap with the 2001 style cap. A sticker was placed in the trunk lid for this recall. You should not have the cap that was used 1998-2000.

Don't know what cap you have. Don't know if the sensor is the problem. Don't know the problem until you have the fault code(s) read, unless it is clear you do not have the updated cap.

No, only the occasional very generous driver will tip the attendant.

And of course, you out-of-state people sometimes get confused and do it, too.

17 times. Close the fuel door. Re-open it and re-check it. Turn it 17 more times. Close the fuel door. Then re-open it again just to re-check it. Then I go to the washroom and wash my hands 9 times. Make sure to bring a paper towels so you don't "touch" anything directly.

Then I watch Judge Whoppner. Only Fruit of the Loom's, and yes. K-Mart sucks.

I click 2 times but since I have a 1997 it does not matter.

To rule out the cap it needs to be pressure tested. In California every 2 years us older car owners have to do a smog inspection, and as part of that inspection the cap is pressure tested on the smog machine. Don't know what is done in other states.

So, I would rule out the cap so you could look elsewhere. If it is pressure tested in your state and the dealer that did the recall is near and the dealer has a smog machine, then maybe the dealer will test it as a favor.

If you can rule out the cap then report back.
