Tint?
should i, and how much does it cost these days?
|
It would be around 100 in most places to do the two windows and the windstop. My other cars all have 20% on all windows, but I left the porsche naked.
|
i've seriously considered tinting the windows. the only thing that stops me is that i can't get the rear plastic window tinted. i've also read that tinting the windstop is not possible because the tint won't stick to it. i just feel that the box would look weird with just the sides tinted...just my opinion.

Do it, old pic though.

I personally don't mind, it adds to the brighter open air feel, but tinting will give you more privacy if that is what you are after.
Also, there is only one way to tint the rear vinyl window and that is to replace it and hand sew in a new tinted one. |
tint!!
I have 5% on the doors and the windstop is spray tinted. no regrets here. |
Ah... wish I could but stupid California law does not allow tint (except in the rear).
I'm not a native Californian, so I especially despise their overly restrictive vehicle codes. Neon is questionable, no suction cups [radar] on the windshield, CARB approved engine mods only, etc., etc., etc. But the damn weather is just too nice to consider moving back to less restrictive mid-west states. |
I would say go for it! I had my previous cars tinted, and it made them look sportier. It also depends on the type of tint you get based on the color of your car. The charcoal tints look really good on a black car, while some of the reflective to semi-reflective look good on other colors. I live in VA, where we have stupid tint laws, can go as low as 35% in the front, 50% in the rear. It would be great if all windows could be 35% As for price, it kinda depends on the type of tint you are buying. My two previous cars were sports coupes that had 5 windows. Premium tint ran me around $125. Seeing that the Boxster only has 3 windows, and the rear is much smaller, I'm sure it would be less pocket cost.
I'll be waiting until Feb-March when I change to a glass top before I tint my windows. |

During the day there are no problems at all, and at night other cars have headlights on so that makes it easy, around dusk I will roll my window down when I pull into traffic just to make sure someone is not coming without their headlights on.
I don't recommend windows this dark for anyone that is not 100% observant when they drive. I don't have the windows on my wifes car this dark. |

How did you spray tint the rear window? Wouldn't it crack off when the top folds? Thanks! |
The windstop is tinted not the rear window.
I agree if it where the window it would crack like crazy. |
Awesome ride, Gary. What setup did you use for lowering springs and sway bar setup on your Box? Did a local shop do the work? Really nice.
Cheers  |
Originally I used oem struts and Elibach lowering springs. This was a very good setup. The ride was still very good. And it lowered the car a inch and a half. I recommend this set up for most people.
I currently am running KSport coilovers and the car is lowered 2inches. The ride is very rough. The Ksport spring rates are over 500 in the rear while the H and R are in the 200 range. Until now I have been unable to find the spring rates of the Elbachs or oem. I have ordered softer springs from Ksport and I think after I add the softer springs the coilovers should be great. |
I believe I paid $100 for my windows including hardtop (20% all around).

I have whatever is legal now days. I think it's 35% on my sides. If I ever get my hard top I will tint the rear also. I think the legal % is different by state. Check your local laws or just ask the place doing your tint.
|
It does vary by state.
Jeph, Where did you get it done for $100? |

$100 isn't too unreasonable for 3 small windows. |

Got mine done for $64 in Vegas. I can't remember what % it is, but it was the one above limo tint. It didn't look too dark in the store, but once I got on the road I realised I might've f@%ked up. It was DARK!!!!!!!! I have trouble seeing out of them at night and on overcast days, and it's very hard to see in the mirrors on a sunny day when I'm wearing sunnies if the sun is coming through the front window. If I could do it again, I would go a mid-range tint. I live in the Mojave desert where it gets to 120'F regularly in summer, so they'll be good then, but in winter (below 30'F) it'll be different. I have found it doesn't look as good with a standard clear plastic window, and I notice the heat coming through the back on a sunny day. I was going to look into getting a tinted plastic one sewn in, but had been tossing up about the glass rear window option. Unfortunately I'm being forced into making the decision sooner rather than later as I noticed two sizeable cracks have formed in the rear window in the last day or two. Money's an issue at the moment so I'm thinking the tinted plastic version might be best. Can anyone recommend a supplier in LA or Vegas? Thanks. |
That is DARK, i have 5% on mine and I have no problem seeing through the mirrors or anything.
I know there are different types of materials. Some of the materials look darker than others but block the same about of uv rays. For example on my X5 I have 20% all of the way around but the type of tint looks way darker than some of the other 20% I have seen. |
