Getting New Keys Made

If I want new keyless entry keys made where should I go? Do I have to go to the dealer to get these made? If not what's my best option? Any idea how much it will cost? When I bought my preowned boxster it only came with one key and the rubber is breaking off around the entry button.

Thanks

You can upgrade the casing on a 2 button keyhead with a $129 model that is from the Carrera GT. I see them on eBay now and then. You take out the key part and the electronics and put it in this new casing that's very cool indeed:

The other option would be to buy a new key head and key blank from Sunset and have your local dealer program the key head and cut the blank for you.

The key head and key blank will set you back about $175. Then, the dealer will probably hit you up for an hour minimum to cut the key and program it. You must leave the car, a working key, and the new key head and blank with them to do the programming.

There's just no cheap way to get more keys or replacement keys for our cars. Sunset's about the cheapest place to get the parts though.

My local dealer quoted me well over $400 for a spare remote key

PS - DO NOT BUY USED KEYS OFF EBAY. THEY ARE WORTHLESS. (Unless they have the original barcoded tag for the key AND it's the model number designed for your year model Boxster, it's a no-go).

They occasionally pop up on craigslist, if you lucky you might be able to find one for a $100. Just make sure it has the white label, so the dealer can program it.

Tim,

I asked the guys at Roger Beasley (they're great for parts and such) about getting another key since I only have one. The blade and remote would cost about $100 or so, and it would take about an hour of labor... I think you'd be looking at $250.

I plan on getting another key or two. They don't charge more labor for multiple keys... so it might be a good idea to get a couple made. Maybe use the blade off of the one I have, but replace the remote part (the blade is fine, but the body/buttons are worn badly).
