Absolute Worst Gas Mileage?
I have seen where folks are getting some pretty good mileage with their boxsters, in the low 30mpg-range with highway driving, especially with the 2.5L engines. I am interested on what the absolute worst mileage you may have gotten on a tank of gas, not counting tracking or racing the car.
I just went through a tank of gas mostly city and backroad spirited driving. If my calculations are correct, I only got 15.3 mpg, which is an all-time low for me. I don't remember for sure, but something like 16-17 mpg was my previous low for mileage. I think I have a long road trip comming up next week (1,600 miles), I will take it easy and see what I can get on the highway. Ed :D |
Ed,
I average around 24 mpg. in my 05 2.7L no matter the driving style. Kim |
21 MPH 90% highway. sucks

"yeah, i take it easy."
10.8 mpg, wow, I'm impressed, is that for a whole tank, or just a bout of spirited driving, and have you done any intake/engine/exhaust mods? Ed  |
My best milage was on a road trip at about 28-31MPG
I average about 22-24MPG (mostly city) maybe even up to 26 when it is a lot of highway. The worst I have ever goten was about 15-16MPG, that was becauce I ran the engine with the AC on while I was working my stereo. That's on a 2.5L  |
I average about 18mpg, that includes both highway and city. I am always pushing my car hard though. All city I would probably end up around 12-13mpg.
The most I have ever got out of one tank of gas was 281miles. At 281miles the gas light came on. I didn't check the average though. |
I so need todo the OBC switch hack so i can participate in this thread
|
when i lived in orange county and had an even split city/hwy i was getting about 19-20mpg on a tank... now in san diego i'm getting about 15mpg per tank, but i'm never on the highway for more than an exit. on long trips, going 80 with the top down i average 24-25mpg.
|
when i used to do all city driving I would get 10-14mpg. averaging 195-215 miles in range for one tank.
now that I do a combination of city and hwy I get 18-20mpg. best range I have gotten with mostly hwy has been 296miles for one tank. pushing the needle deep in the red. |

Prime example of a POSER! DAMN IT CJ! Didn't you learn anything from that other thread? GOSH! |
Im not a poser, these are posers.... VVVVVV
|
CJ - You can always be boring like I am and just do the math... "I traveled X miles on this tank/it took Y gallons to fill up this tank = " Keeping track of your MPG is a good way to find out about problems ahead of time, if you have a serious drop in MPG for the normal amount of driving, something is happening.

Worst - 24.30
Best - 27.10 Car: 01' regular tip. I would imagine a brand new 2.7L MT could hit 34-35 mpg. |
Ive once gone 400 miles of highway on one tank, full to empty, lol. Ummm, and I think Ive gone like 200 miles full to empty when I drive really really hard. How bigs a tank? I usually put 14 or 15 gallons in.
|
I get about 20-24 MPG. Top down, Sport Chrono on, and spirited driving.

My average mileage with the S is 23. With my 2000 Boxster it was 26. However, unless you have an accurate easy to measure your mileage, such as with a GPS, your mileage records might not be accurate. I have known that my speedometer was high, thus my odometer was reading high. With the help of the local PD I took readings on my speedometer today. At an indicated 50 my actual speed was 46. This is a huge error, in my opinion. roughly 8% at that speed.
Are there speedometer gears available for the Boxster S that I can use to adjust the indicated speed? Tom |
Best 28, going downhill all the way on the freeway with cruise control from Albuquerque to Dallas. Sizable drop in elevation.
Worst? 12 mpg on the tail of the dragon. Worth every penny for overpriced $3.50 per gallon premium! |
During a road trip my OBC read 511 miles until empty for about 15 minutes after I filled up, then I actually started driving and it decreased to about 320. But my average mileage on a tank is about 280, which seems normal, and much better than some other sports cars. :D

15 mpg here. My commute is 2 miles every day, and the fact my engine never warms up shows:(
Also think bad O2 sensors are not helping, I'm wondering how much it'll help when I replace them. -David |
Mine are Imperial Gallons not US, but they are close.
Best 31.5 on a 400 mile trip Worst 9.1 on a track event $3.50 a gallon, I wish. Its 1.05 GBP for a litre of Shell Vmax (99 RON), 4.54 L to a UK Gallon equals 4.55 GBP per gallon which at exchange rate of 2.05 is 9.77US per gallon. The kicker is that most of this is tax. I am going to do a Thelma and Louise now :( |

David, this has got to be a major killer for a car...especially our Boxsters. You need to find a longer way to work! :) |

you lucky buggers we pay about £5.00 a gallon for premium, work it out $9.50 dont you ever complain, EVER. lol J |

but if i had to pay that much for gas, i wouldn't drive anything else but a box |

Tool Pants, I'm trying to figure out where the half-mile-long hill is near San Jose.
One our first road trip with my wife, I got 26 mpg. A month later, on a trip alone, I got 29 mpg. What is Porsche trying to tell me? ;) |

I will have to get back to you about the hill....
In the meantime. 999999. I took both of the pictures. No photoshop. |
I thought you might find this interesting, there is a great EPA website that keeps track of mileage estimates for different cars.
EPA Website Check out the city/highway mileage estimates and hp for the base Boxster with manual trans. 2000 19/27 217 hp 2003 20/29 228 hp 2005 20/29 240 hp 2007 23/32 245 hp Interesting, I want 32 mpg with 245 hp, thank you very much..... Ed  |
So I had to run to Florida to visit family this week and they have a Porsche dealership in Melbourne Beach. Stopped in to test drive a 2003 Boxster S (just playing, not interested in buying) and noticed that they had a base 2008 that listed 27 mpg for the highway (not the 32 mpg Porsche had originally given for the 2.7L engine) on the window sticker. I guess that reflects the new EPA method for estimating the mileage.
Ed  |
bmussatti said:"I get about 20-24 MPG. Top down, Sport Chrono on, and spirited driving."
That is way better than I get with the same car. I also have a 2006 S and consistently get only 18 mpg for my 12 mile trip to town, which is half highway and half traffic. I'm trusting the readout for this; maybe I should check it the old fashioned way. |
I drove 1500 miles this week, almost all highway. I traveled very consistantly at 78 mph. I first went through a tank of gas with the top up and got 28 mpg (its painful to drive 300+ miles with the top up). I then went through a tank of gas with the top down and got 25 mpg.
I dont have a computer in the car to give readouts on mileage at different speeds. For those of you that do, what highway speed gives the best mpg? I am wondering what I would get if I drove, say 60 or 65 mph on the highway. Its never going to happen, I was just wondering. Ed  |
bmussatti mileage
Dear bmussatti,
you said:"I get about 20-24 MPG. Top down, Sport Chrono on, and spirited driving." As I said, I only get 18mpg based on the readout with the same car. Under "settings - consumption" I have selected "miles/gal." But there is setting called "mpg UK"; if yours was set to this - the larger Imperial gallon - that would explain your better milage. Can you check? |
Software
I track my mileage with this:
