Satnav for older Boxsters

Is there a satnav for the older (pre-'05) Boxsters? I've seen rare pictures of Boxster center consoles with a big screen in the middle. Was it a factory option? Anyone know if they are available to purchase?

Here you go:

You can put the Porsche factory nav in 02 and above 986 (MOST bus compatible). Check Suncoast porsche under porsche-986-electronics.
I think there is also a factory solution for pre 02 models, but I don't think it is great.

Of course, there are a bunch of 2-din aftermarket solutions (pioneer, eclipse etc.), which fit pretty well into the console. For cost/feature reasons, I'd go with this route - but some people like factory stuff.

Maybe this is for the pre 02's:

the screen navs are not that great, but they are expensive and hard to find. the best is the harmon kardon traffic pro. it looks like your stock deck unit, its a simple plug and play instal and has a sexy english girl telling you how to make the next move. it has alot of features and the screen has arrows and streets with minor graffics. its nice. I got mine new for 300 bucks.

$300?!?!?!?! How did you do that? Hook a fellow member up.

$300? That's a steal! Hook us both up;)

Otherwise yeah I guess I'm going to have to go for aftermarket for my '00S. Honestly I'm just after google maps or any sort of mapping function so I can just see where the roads are, I'll plan my own route (live traffic would be nice but not absolutely necessarily).

David, most services that provide traffic reporting are subscription based. If you/someone knows of free traffic service (that feeds directly into the nav, not a number I need to call :) ), please post.

Screen navs rock. They are easy to use and look good if you install them right.

Here are shots of the AVIC D3 in my '02 986S. I did the install myself. I have the BT cell phone adapter, the iPod cable, and the back-up camera installed.

The faceplate in the pics was my first try. I've since made a new one that's covered with stretched vinyl that looks completly factory.

The entire setup with all the extras and harness adapters was about $1100 from Crutchfield. The good thing is that when I sell the car I can pull it out and make it stock again in about an hour.

If that's what you are looking for the Traffic Pro unit mentioned above isn't for you. I've been using mine for a couple of weeks now, and it works great if you're trying to find a specific address, but does not offer a map view, or anything fancy like that.

Does anyone know if updated CD's for the Traffic Pro are available anywhere? Mine doesn't have a lot of new developments here in Northern VA on it.

I think you can do both, factory or aftermarket.

I do know that my service tech thought the older Porsche NAV was garbage. I have no personal experience either way.
