Widest tires on factory original 16" wheels

Hi All,

Have any of you guys ever driven your Boxster with 225/245 frt/rear combinations with the original/factory 16" Boxster wheels (I am assuming this is the largest possible tire size combination on the 6/7" wide rims)?

I would love to upgrade my wheels with the 18" diameter 5-spoke Carrera rims, but I cannot afford them right now. Since I have to get new tires, I was wondering
if this tire combination (if possible) would work well.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just food for thought bro..... I had the 18" factory Porsche rims on my boxster..... new tires were going to cost me about $800 for the set....so I started shopping the guy from precision porsche sold me a set of 19" rims and tires which were 295 x 30`s in the rear for $1200, I then sold my stock rims on ebay for $800....I was out like $400 dollars for new rims and tires that had I think less than 1000 miles on them still with 9/32nds of tread which is brand new. Unless you just love your tires, when you`re ready to get new tires always get the new rims you can usually find better deals that way, and you can always sell the factory rims to recoup some money.

If you look into upgarding right now you can get a premium for your 16" rims because people want then fo snow tires. You could probably get $400 for them. I like 17" personally because you don't need spacers, but look at your options you might be able to buy the rims individually and the tires in pairs a lot cheaper than buying them from one person, also check craigslist.

While you can squeeze a 225/245 combo onto 6 and 7" wide rims, it is not ideal because the sidewall is unable to be level (buldges out), thus loosing some stiffness. 205/225 is the prefered size for 6/7 combo.

Since I obviously want to use wider tires, I think it is time to get a new set of wheels. I will do some shopping to see I can get a good deal on a used whee/tire combination. And as
joy frog suggested, I can always sell the factory rims and get some of the money back.

A bunch of us forum members have purchased very nice aftermarket wheels from www.wheeldynamics.com.

I got the 18 inch Carrera lights and they are really nice. I had them shod with Michelin PS2's and they were $2200 shipped to Houston.

Of course, I also put on some H&R 7mm spacers on the back because the ebrake cable was just a tad too close to the rim for my comfort level.
