3.2 turbo

Turbowerx has finally posted a dyno curve for the 3.2. Not the 50% bump Marc had initially said, but pretty stout nonetheless. I still think I'd spring the extra 5 grand for the low compression pistons et al and shoot for the 500 hp Box...

Hmm I wonder how much power that thing could pull with aftermarket headers, bypass pipes & exhaust.

well if you're dumping before an exhaust with the bypass pipes, whats the point of even bothering with an exhaust for power?

What else would you have to beef up in the drivetrain on a Boxster to handle the additional power? I have seen guys increase horsepower to the point of continually breaking other things.

that is nice. I will kill to see some videos.

Can you give more details on the $5k piston thingy?

Why would you have to change anything? The Boxster S is the same tranny as the 996. The 3.2L engine has 50 less ponies then the 996 engine, there should at least be 50hp of safe playing room for the tranny. Plenty of 996 folks tune their cars to 350+hp w/o changing anything on the tranny w/o a single issue.

*On a side note

If I remember correctly,Todd(guy who is always putting 996 engines in his 986) has been using the 2.5L tranny with his 3.6L and it's worked out fine. His tranny that was meant to handle 200hp, it's handling 300+ without an issue, the 986 S better be able to handle more then 2.5L 986.

The $5k piston thingy

I asked Marc if internals could be beefed up to allow higher boost and hence more horsepower. He said he could replace the pistons with lower compression pistons, different rings, rod bolts, things such as that so the boost could be bumped up. He said he would do the rebuild for like 5 or 6 grand, which is less than most people would charge, but he was personally interested in doing it so would cut me a deal. I don't know how much boost you could run, but he said it was a 500 hp build, and the running gear on the S is already so good that you wouldn't need to do anything else to it. Sure, another 5 or 6 grand on top of the turbo install is a bunch of money, but for the cost of an engine transplant, you get double the stock output. C'mon, let's think "group buy" here!

Exhaust still helps more than you think. Usually with that setup, i've seen 3inch exhaust being used. Turbo and Supercharged cars perform much better with larger exhausts than N/A vehicles, infact, if you go 3 inch exhuast on a N/A car, you might lose power instead of gain it.

Thanks dmcutter,

I've been anxiously waiting for this kit to hit prime time.
Two issues I'd like to see addressed: Fuel management, and detonation control. I don't know what price point they are coming in at, but let's say its the same as 2.5 kit/$7k. That's ok, but that competes with a 3.6 swap.

On casual glance, I am not clear why the 2.5 kit get's more % bump than the 3.2. Using 2.5 numbers, the 3.2 should get a 84 hp bump and not the stated 77.

Also, "• Compatibility with most aftermarket headers", makes no sense to me.

RE: lower CR pistons and stouter bottom end for 500hp has my full attention :D 5-6k in addition to the base kit of 7k compared to a 996TT comes to 13k vs 17k, roughly not including intsall/removal labor. Advantage of 996TT motor is proven reliabilty (relatively), will have more off boost grunt, but the downside is massaging to fit and slightly higher cost. Hopefully, the "kit" is bolt on, since it hasn't hit market, we really don't know for certain.

You can count me in as being very interested in a group buy for the basic kit. I normally don't like playing guinea pig, but this might be too good to pass up depending on what kind of deal we can swing.

Now THIS is interesting. I've been planning a 3.6 swap for my S sooner or later ,and always considered a turbo kit for the 3.2 but the real question was always motor reliability. If you are pulling pistons, rods, etc from the 3.2 to beef it up, hypothetically that should remove most of the issues. I'd like to think you also install the older IMS assembly with dual bearings.

I could definitely have some interest in a built 3.2 block with turbos in my car.

I got back in touch with Marc for further clarification, just to make sure I wasn't spreading bum scoop.

"Getting to 500hp will require custom pistons, and probably a stronger clutch pressure plate. It will definitely require larger injectors, and probably a larger fuel pump. Stock rods are probably ok, but will need to have ARP or RaceWare rod bolts. And of course some serious on-dyno tuning. This would be our starting point."

Oh hell now I may keep my car! I love the way it looks and with 500HP I could be tlked into keeping it.

boxsterz 10-04-2007 12:28 PM

It just came to me that maybe the 3.2L is not a TT setup like the 2.5, but rather a single turbo more down stream. That would make "Compatibility with most aftermarket headers" doable.

Do they have pricing yet?
