Second from the top is a photo looking through the bulb access hole onto the amber filter which at that point was partially removed. The soldering iron method went okay, albeit slow. A larger tip probably would have made the job easier but I typically solder small components and used what I had. I did have a problem with the reflectors which is documented here. Will be looking at that again later today. http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13354 |
i've read other threads on this method but wasn't sure if it would've worked like it did for you. thanks for the info and again great job! i have amber lights and a cheap sodering iron, but do i have steady enough hands? how hard was it?

Let me analyze this. Clues given: Beers on the table, Wheels on the floor Boxster on the roof Colonel Mustard with a screwdriver jumps on a Segway does the Amberdectomy flees with the car on the roof. |
@spark00
The mod wasn't difficult once I got the hang of it and the second light definitely went smoother than the first. Don't confuse that with being easy. Still not sure if I would try it on expensive litronics. Several times I thought for sure something important would break, great scratched, or otherwise be damaged. Because of the angle you can not reach all parts of the diffuser with a soldering iron and eventually I just had to grab what I could with needlenose pliers, pull, and hope it didn't whip around inside and take out the reflector. Steady hands was one of my primary concerns going in but for once they didn't shake. Too much on my mind trying to be careful and figure out the best method as I went. And quelling hand tremmors was actually my joke behind loading the table with beer bottles for the "prep" photo. @Pilot2519j You sank my battleship! |
I was just busting your chops on the other thread requesting pix. Here they are.
That's cool, you can see Dallas city hall from your garage/roof! I wanna see your loft. The lights look great! But I will not be attempting this on my lights, as an error on just ONE unit will set me back roughly $1800. Besides, I'm finished with mods on my car (I might be the only one on the board that's "finished.") Great pix! |
