MPG after MAF replacement
 

For the last 7,500 miles I had ongoing MAF problems.
I cleaned the MAF about 3 times but I still had erratic idling (w/o CEL)

When I was on the track two weekends ago two buddies of mine with pretty much identical Boxster S and I all started on full tanks and when I had to re-fuel before the last run of the day they still had 1/4 tank left.
So last week I got CEL P0102 which I couldn't make go away and finally had to bite the bullet and replaced the MAF ($248 at ********************************az).
I noticed that after the MAF change my avg. MPG went from below 18 to 22 :)
So now I figure that the MAF will pay for itself in about 6 months.

So the conclusion: If you have ongoing MAF problems, eventually simply replace the damn thing; your car will thank you for it

I replaced mine about 2 years ago and didn't recall any improvement in MPG, however I was so happy that it fixed my engine cut-out at ~5500 rpm, that I never bothered to check.

Did it fix your idle issue? If not, cleaning the throttle body is a good (and inexpensive) option.

I replaced my MAF and noticed less need to rev from stop to go, must help with consumption a little don't you think. When inspecting the old MAF and the new one i noticed a little reduction in the diameter of the wire connected to that resistor that's on there, maybe caused by corrosion or just wear from the air passing threw, that must have an negative effect on the resistor IMO.

when i replaced mine i did also increase a slight increase in MPG, but nothing to brag about hehe.

the idling is better but still not perfect.
I was thinking about cleaning the throttle body (and even already got the spray) but all the DYI I found so far didn't give me enough confidence that I would be able to put all the parts correctly back together again, so I got a little cautious...

Well, given the MAF is one of the primary sensors the fuel system uses to control the amount of fuel injected, AND it will go rich to protect the engine in the event of faulty signal... It's entirely feasible that you might get fuel economy increases.

I replaced my MAF recently and immediately noticed better throttle response (even after I tried cleaning the old one which helped a little but not that much.)

The real return to smooth running and MPG came when I replaced all 4 of the oxygen sensors about a month later.

Now the car is running beautifully. Once you get past 40K miles it's good to replace all of the above but I would only recommend the Bosch OEM parts, not the cheap ones found on eBay. Here is a case where you get what you pay for and there are plenty of good discount sources apart from the local stealership.
