are 19s too big?

are they too big for the car, or should i just get 18s?

also, what tire size would be good for the back wheels, in 18s and 19s?

thx a lot, DJ

ddb 09-08-2007 07:00 AM

Before getting my 19's, I thought they were too big. If the style of my 19's were available in 18 inch I would have probably gone with 18's, or even 17's if they made them. Having said all of that I'm thrilled with the 19's and wouldn't have it any other way.

My rear tires are 265/30/19. A lot of people recommend larger rear tires - 275 or 285, but I was warned to stick with the 265's and they work fine.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

that looks great man, and thats a nice pic as well.
im trying to decide what size and what wheels to get. i will be buying them within a few days now, probably monday, so decisions decisions.

yellowboxster01 09-08-2007 07:31 AM

Good luck with that decision. I've been looking since I got my Box. Every time I think I've picked one out, I find something else I like better. If I had the coin to drop on HRE's the decision would be simple.;)

djomlas 09-08-2007 07:32 AM

well if no $ was involved, it would be easy haha

986Roadster 09-08-2007 07:48 AM

I will be honest, I have been saying that 19z are the way to go. but i think 18z would be the smartest. i think 19z are too big, and if i had put 18z i would of
never of seen a real big difference. performance - i feel like the 19z pull me back alittle. they are fairly light rims. if you stay with a 265, and a rim width below 10" you will not have to put a spacer. i have 275 because they fit better on a 10.5"width rim. i woiuld stay with a track size tire. 18/30/265 10" width light weight you won't lose any performance. i went too big and now regret it. if tomorrow i decide to track the car, my rims and tires are too big for my 2002 base 225hp car.....19/30/275 with a 10.5 width rim. i say go 1inch above stock, look under your gas cap!! does not mention a 19 inch rim for a reason.

986Roadster 09-08-2007 07:56 AM

ohhhhhh and don't forget to buy a rim with atleast a 3inch lip....the lip makes the car look really mean!!!!! changes the look of the car from the front! you need a deep dish rim!

986Roadster 09-08-2007 08:01 AM

compressed!

986rgt 09-08-2007 08:36 AM

Hey dj, I would consider how small the stock brakes will look with 19's. I have considered 19's too and just can't imagine how tiny our brakes will look. If you're thinking of adding "S" or 996 brakes down the road, I would go for the 19's. If not, I would stay with the 18's. Also remember, with bigger rims comes extra weight = slower car :(
Things to consider, but any way you go, I hope they're Black, and we see em soon!

I currently have the 19" HRE 540s(3 piece). Im happy with the fit, ride, and the look. Not to hijack this thread but IMO, id stay away from multi piece wheels. I think monoblocks(1 piece) wheel designs are far more durable for everyday driving. Ive bent those wheels a couple times now and im just tired of the headaches. The wheel repair guy is actually contemplating on welding the internal seams to prevent future leaks. I live in SoCal and im very carefull when i drive, but you cant just get lucky everytime. :(
I dont track the car thats why weight is not a factor for me, i dont mind heavier monoblocks.
I have 19" BBS Starform monoblocks on my 92 911 Turbo, never have i bent those wheels.
Just my 2 cents.

squeak 09-08-2007 09:37 AM

I have the 19' wheels on my S. I love the way they look, get lots of positive comments, wouldn't change them :) The rear tires are 265/35/19.

edevlin 09-08-2007 02:31 PM

Go for the 18's, unless you are made of money, its expensive enough to pay for the 18's. The other reason to consider 19's if you are doing some serious track work and want that short, stiff sidewall. I am not sure how much harsher the 19's are, but I could tell the difference going from 17's to 18's, just my two cents,

Ed

boggtown 09-08-2007 02:40 PM

19's, Its a factory size even. It really does look good. But its all up to you. Its not like my car looks good or anything...

djomlas 09-08-2007 06:21 PM

thx for the replys guys.
i know that the car will stop good, so good the brakes will look is no concern, plus boggtown shows, they don't look that bad at all, or i mean small.

so just to clear this up....if i go with 275s i will need spacers?

boggtown 09-08-2007 08:01 PM

The width of the wheel or size of the tire have nothing to do with spacers, its the offsets. If you buy wheels made for the boxster and have the correct offsets you wont need spacers. My company had them universal for 996/986 so I did need a 7mm spacer on the rear. If you buy a proper set that are custom made for a boxster's offset (BBS, O.Z., Fikse, etc...) you wont have any worries. I hate to go expensive on you, but tirerack has some good stuff. If not, ebay rims seem to be just fine surprisingly. I use a 275 rear BTW and a 235 front.

djomlas 09-08-2007 08:44 PM

thx for the reply.
so what different offsets can be fitted for a 986?
55F and 42R? is that all or?

manguasha 09-08-2007 10:15 PM

19's all the way!

I think 19's are great.

I agree with edevlin that the ride is harsher (over bumps), but the grip is fantastic, not to mention the looks!

I have 225 in front and 265 at the rear, with Carrera S (original) rims. The brake callipers look nice on them and they do match.

Personally I think 19"s look too big on a 986 body style. Although 987s looks AWESOME with 19"s.

Stick to 18"s and lower it however you will,Eibach springs,RoW kit or Coilovers and it will look sweet!

FrayAdjacent 09-09-2007 07:31 AM

IMHO, save that weight and go with 18"s. You get a little more rubber to dampen noise and shock a bit. That extra rubber can also help with feeling when the tires are pushed to the limit.

I think going with 19"s is more about show...

Grizzly 09-09-2007 01:40 PM

19s - 245-40-19 front - 275-35-19 rear. I wouldn't trade them and the ride difference is negligible.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k2...JsLowered1.jpg

This is the one you lowered for me. It looks even better lowered.

Gary in BR 09-09-2007 07:37 PM

I have 19's plus coil overs and i dont regret it. Even after a year I still think it looks amazing and get comments on them weekly.

These arrive from Italy for me next week, they are 19's, asked to get Pirelli tyres the same as what is on my Dads Cayman.

Will blast up pics once thay are on.

easyc 09-10-2007 05:04 AM

Rear offset wise you should be able to get away with anything between a 35ish and 65 with the later needing about a one inch spacer... I believe factory is 44mm? I don't like 19 unless the car is lowered... you should be able to 275/30 and 235/35 tires

P-DUB 09-10-2007 06:47 AM

I say go with the 19's. The look great and run even better. Here's apic of my 986, and then i swapped the wheels over to the 987, i think it looks good on both.

Hey P-DUB, what springs or coilovers are you running?

djomlas 09-12-2007 03:21 PM

thx for all the replys guys, but i decided to go with 18s.
i should receive them next week, as well as tires, and will post them up.

black wheels again woot woot

cbenitah 09-12-2007 08:36 PM

I still vote 19's :D I am going with 315 in the rear no spacer, once my rears are gone. I have 275 now

yellowboxster01 09-12-2007 09:34 PM

A 315 rear is going to stick out, a lot. That's turbo territory.

P-DUB 09-13-2007 05:17 AM

Chaudanova,

The springs are Eibach. Drives like a champ and handles even better. I can't see spending the money on coil overs unless you hit the track all the time, or plan on keeping the car for ever. I have only ever put spring on cars, probably 8 of them now, and have never had any problems with any of them. I even put H&R's on my new 987. I would not hesitate using H&R or Eibach. You can get other springs like Champion and Gamballa and so on, but they contract with Eibach or H&R to run the springs for them, so i would rather stick with the guys that do all them testing and actually make the springs.

O.K. DJ, do what you want. But don't think you can rub Enzyte on them when you find out they're an inch too short...
