Dumb question of the day

In all of the do it yourself work on the net it alway say to have your radio code handy before you disconnect your battery.

That has me scared to disconnect the battery until I find out more about the sacred radio code!

-Is it specific to my car (sorta like a VIN#)
-What happens if I don't have the code, is it just a matter of reprogramming the stations?

Can anyone fill me in on this?

Much appreciated
