986 Forum up for grabs

Dont' panic folks. The site wiill remain up and running. I am simply looking for someone who may want the site. I have 4 sites running and dont have the time to give attention and detail to all of the sites. That being the case, I am looking for a new owner for 986forum who will dedictae the time to continue growing and promoting the site. Will trade for a boxster :D :D :D

Alienz 07-27-2004 08:26 PM

How much are you asking for?

JT 07-27-2004 08:52 PM

I will entertain any fair offers.

Alienz 07-28-2004 12:24 AM

Well since taking care of a forum is a pain in the ass in the first place, I say it should be for free.

QporscheQ 07-28-2004 05:32 AM

JT you are the man. This is without a doubt one of my favorite websites on the internet and some how you have managed to keep away all the advertising and pop-ups that plague so many of the great "free" websites out there. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

aesir 07-28-2004 07:56 AM

If someone wants to cover costs I can help with administration and upgrades.

Alienz 07-28-2004 11:05 PM

We can have more than one owner.

jfmillr 07-30-2004 12:03 PM

Hi JT,
If 986forum needs a new home I can house it. I already run multiple websites on my web server at home. I am running sDSL 1.1 dedicated in each direction and for the most part have 99% uptime. If you are interested email me directly.

Tool Pants 08-01-2004 02:41 PM

I vote that you give it to Alienz. Jeff

jfmillr 08-15-2004 10:47 AM

hey whatever was fine with me. Thought I would put the offer out there....

Brad Roberts 08-29-2004 10:26 PM

I would like to speak with you also about running the forum.

I currently run/own the largest 914 forum site available on the web. I have enough admins in place another forum would not be an issue. I bring to the table 17 years of Porsche experience and 5 years of pro racing experience in ALMS and Grand Am ( team engineer capacity) and 7 years of computer industry experience.

Servers and bandwith is a non issue. We have our own colo space with our own servers (W2K and Linux) and currently run/admin Invision PB on .php and MYSQL.

I have kept the 914club "vendor neutral" meaning we have NO vendor affiliation and dont accept sponsors unless we are holding an event (see this months Excellence issue)

sounds good, but i still would like to see this forum go to one of our long members aliens or jfmiller.

Brad Roberts 08-30-2004 10:29 AM

I dont disagree. I have spent the last 5 years coughing up free technical advice to different Porsche lists for ZERO gain. It takes a dedicated person with *some* free time..with some computer knowledge...some graphics knowledge... with some Porsche knowledge. It takes a leader... a manager... you end up wearing a lot of hats. Growing a successful site (however you decide success) is rewarding but very time consuming (I'm guessing the current person running the show doesnt have the time) I eat sleep breath Porsche. I autoX 16+ times a year and road race/crew 10-12 times a year. This doesnt leave many weekends open. The weekends that are open are filled with Porsche fun runs...Tahoe runs...Santa Cruz runs...

Good times.

I am behind you, Porsche986, hate to see this turn into a PPBB.

I hear overtones like that...

JonnyBGood 08-30-2004 01:44 PM

I'd like to give it a try, but I've never done one. Either way, I'd like to see one of the regulars take over the board.

JBG

Brad Roberts 08-30-2004 02:09 PM

I have spent ZERO time on PPBB.. what is the story behind your comment ?

B

PeterJoyce 08-30-2004 06:14 PM

If it is ok with you JT when you are ready to get rid of it start up an official poll to let the members decide, just an idea even though you own it.

Brad Roberts 08-30-2004 07:09 PM

No response on the "overtones" comment ?

Sorry. Wrong person. I didnt realize "MickeyMouse" posted that.

Anyone ever wonder why people dont use their real names to join these BBS's ??

same can be said for pictures brad...

As regard to who runs the forum... i like it to stay with a long member they are used to the way people post and the way things are done. I am sure you have a good hosting system but so do others..

I just would like it go to forum members.. maybe you could be a MOD if you want some involvment.

who knows its up to JT its his forum and his domain name. Besides running a forum is hard as you need to be quick to delete potentially bordline messages as "messageboard" is a legal minefield.

but i did check your forum out a while back and it was good i must admit.

Richard Truss 08-31-2004 07:38 AM

I use my real name :D

mrmickeymouse 08-31-2004 02:47 PM

Mr.Roberts-

Why would I answer a question that you have not checked out for yourself. It would be illogical for me to answer your question, without you looking for yourself.

You seemed to be well versed on the in's and out's of the forums.

I thought your boxster surfing would of brought you to the illustrous PPBB.

You are still right on Porsche986.

***Sorry for not telling you my name, I did not know it was a requirement.***

Good point. I'll change it. At least she isnt nekkid..

I like the layout of this forum. JT used a good system that is semi plug and play. Luckily it has a style sheet so you can change the look/colors of the forum in about 30 minutes. It has a pretty nice admin area for managing everything behind the scenes. He has left it mostly "stock" appearing. The front page is generated ..feels a little cluttered (I dont feel we need all the information it is spewing) but again.. it is the generic layout that the code writers released. Kinda feels like Yahoo's front page.. too much information. Semi overwhelming.

Brad Roberts 09-01-2004 12:04 PM

I know of the PPBB, but I dont know of it's history or the way it is managed/ran. Normally people start a BB because they dislike something about some other board/forum. Typically these boards are started by a renegade leader in some form or fashion that bucks the system. IF that leader has a decent following his board will grow and the other boards will die a slow death. Boards live or die based on the people and the leaders.

porsche986 09-04-2004 01:05 AM

yep i agree, i also like the layout of this new colour :)

JT 09-09-2004 08:44 AM

I dont have an issue running the site. It's actually self running and I have a bunch of automated jobs for the maintenance of the site. My problem is that its costing me 180.00 for hosting. I dont have any advertisers on this site like I do on others.

porsche986 09-09-2004 09:12 AM

i run a few sites from my apache server it costs me nothing at all

Ad Sach 09-09-2004 03:59 PM

>>180.00 for hosting<<
Are you talking MONTHLY? - seems like you should be in the $40-$60 range. OK, I don't really know the requirements (like how much DASD) but the bandwidth doesn't seem out of range for a business site.

What do you get for your $180?

Brad Roberts 09-09-2004 08:27 PM

JT,

Let me know.. I can slap it on a twin proc Xeon box with 2 gigs of ram and over 200 gigs of available space (for free.) We have no bandwith restriction and the pipe going into the cage space is rather large. Right now the Xeon box is up and running with nothing on it. I know this setup doesnt require much computing power, but the database of pages will continue to grow as well as the need for picture space as people upload more pics over time. I specialized in Colo buildouts for redundency and fail over. The space/bandwith we have is with a well funded money making company out of San Fran. The colo facility itself houses Wells Fargo and several other large SF banks... the colo isnt going anywhere.

TO2IMAGE 09-13-2004 07:03 PM

jt i am new to this sight although it has been more than helpful for me if money is an issue then i can donate a few to keep you going.im damn sure i have saved it reading here on my boxster thank you chris

Richard Truss 09-13-2004 07:27 PM

well, the board is self running to an extent -- of course, that story on the front page -- i CANT WAIT for the new carrera to appear in Europe in july. And what do you guys think about that Boxster pic? Real or no? I guess we can go to Porsche.com to find out. :D

(a little ribbing.... dont kick me off. PPBB scares me -- TROLL!!!!!!!!!!!)

sTTevo 09-13-2004 11:32 PM

You guys... this forum will need to change its name to 987forum.com soon ;)

CJ_Boxster 03-09-2007 04:42 PM

Yes! i won 986forum.com on a buyitnow auction on eBay!

Best $22.95 I ever spent, but do you think $99,977.05 too much for shipping???

Wow, was this really put on as an ebay auction? (or did i just a miss a casual joke?)

Tool Pants 03-09-2007 08:44 PM

Jorge ultimately did put the forum on ebay for something like 2 cents, but it did not sell back then.

Whatever happened to Alienz?
