Air-cooled Porsche sounds

I was at an autocross today and there was an early 80's late 70's 930 turbo there. I've heard some air-cooled Porsches before, but it didn't hit me until today just how bad they sound! People say they sound so great yadda yadda....that thing sounded like a damn tractor with the usually smoke that most older air-cooled porsches produce. There was nothing wrong with the car....it just sounded bad. It makes me scratch my head when people gush about how they "used to sound" on the air-cooled boards.
