Cayman front on 986
 

I guess this would be my first post in here... so Hello!

I'm heavily involved in the VW and Audi scene I guess you could say and I'm thinking of picking up a Boxster here soon.

Just wondering what you guys think of this?

I think it really updates the look of the car and it all can be done with Factory Porsche parts. Since the Cayman is basically a hardtop Boxster I thing it works.

car in the photos is a 986 boxster... plug and play for the cayman front would be on the 987 boxster only... this car has had extensive front work done to it.

love the wheels! not sure about the vents on the side of the front bumper...I don't believe those are on the actual cayman?

I think it looks great, but this would be very expensive to do since you would be replacing the lights, hood, bumper etc... There are much cheaper options for changing the front bumper on a 986. Other option would be to get a 987, then you could put the Cayman bumper right on.

....or just buy a Cayman and saw the roof off :eek:

+1 on the hood crest, but otherwise, I think the car looks great.

Hmm...it's also got the Cayman's rear bumper cover. This car would've cost a lot of money to put together.

The more I see them, the more I think I like the old side vents more than the 987's side vents. Makes me wonder if it would have been easier for this guy to start with a 987 and just change the vents and bumper covers. :D

This kit seen here on the white 986 I posted is from a Swiss tuner called Z-Art. The full Cayman look rear bumper, GT2 skirts and Cayman front bumper with the side vents. They have some pretty cool stuff available that really updates the 986. They are also involved with the Zeintec Hardtop for the 986 & 987.

From what I've heard though, the 987 and Cayman front are basically a bolt on to the 986 besides a few bolts, brackets and screws. This is also true of the 997 front from what I've heard.

That's just too much front 'over hang' for a short wheel base. Makes 18" wheels look like 14's. I also would never swap fried egg 986/996 lights for Herbie Love Bug 997 lights. The Cayman tear drops are different although not necessarily better imo. I'd rather see the new Cayenne lights if that were feasible.

i wanna see someone think outside the BOX to do something new, seems like people are too scared to 'redesign' a porsche on their own.
if i had money i would do some weird stuff, not that it would be better probably hahaha

986 with a Cayman front doesn't work for me. It's mixes the old with the new (and not in the popular retro fashion), and I don't think that carries over very well here.

The lines are different -more edgy on the newer Cayman, whereas the 986's rear is more curvaceous. It doesn't make the car's design work as a whole.

Don't mix the generations. And if you're spending that kind of money on an upgrade... wouldn't a 987 be within reach?

What if someone did a 997 front with a smaller bumper? Might give it a pretty cool retro feel from the Porsche 550?

Based on how much my 996 Turbo front end conversion was, you'd be better off just buying a Cayman in the first place.:)
