No they are not the same. The Sport Chrono package does 2 things, increased throttle response with less pressure on the pedal and tunes down when PSM kicks in. If you have PASM it may also make the suspension stiffer but I can't remember with certainty.

A chip updgrade may also do these things but is primarily intended to get more horsepower of the car by remapping whatever they can electronically to claim more HP. It's also a great way to void your warranty or at a minimum make your warranty claim a miserable experience if you have any problems with the car related to the engine, exhaust or electronics. Porsche can detect a different chip. You may be able to replace it with the original if you have problems and take it in but if they still are able to detect the chip was there, ask you if you had a chip and you say "no" well that's fraud and the warranty coverage conversation will likely end right there until you hire a lawyer. I'd only chip a car if it was out of warranty. "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're all not out to get me."

I'm curious how you're planning on "installing" Sports Chrono. It's not available as an add-on, software or otherwise from the other 220+ dealers in the US.

I found out its not possible.
Although a GIAC ECU reprogram might get the same effect or even better , according to some tech guys.

Improvements from chips/ECU modifications are suspect at best and normally predicated on running high octane fuel, a shortage of which is apparently already plaguing you in the CR, per your other post. I suspect this would be a monumental waste of money in addition to any flack you'd get from Porsche per 1JB's post.

Porsche has taken the same 2.7 mill that originally produced @217 hp and have managed 8 years later to get 245 hp out of it. Frankly, I think they've pretty much wrung ever hp out of it and the 3.2. Note that to get 15 more hp into the S they actually ended up bumping the displacement (not the only reason, but you get the point).

I read the base Boxster 09 will have 270 HP.
I found out that here I can get up to 91 octanes.
Is that still too low.

The GIAC representative will let me use the ECU upgrade for 2 weeks to see if I like it or not.
So might try it just to see, since my warranty has expired anyway.

With regard to GIAC specifically, they've created performance tuning software for most of the 986 variants, but not specifically for the 987 so I'd be curious what is being sold to you, it's often helpful to read the fine print. Their 986 software is compatible with 91 fuel (but apparently requires a CAI for optimization).

There are entire web pages devoted to speculating on forthcoming Porsche models, so I won't comment other than to say that Porsche will do what it has to to be competitive...but just. Thankfully the other German auto-makers are engaged in a substantial HP war otherwise we'd see the miserly improvements in power that marked the course of the 986 evolution.

motoadve,

They do show it available for the Cayman, so I would think it would work with the 987 :

http://www.giacusa.com/programs.php?mpid=133

Perhaps you can send them an email, I cannot find a direct number on their web site :

http://www.giacusa.com/contact_us.php

No dealers in Costa Rica, but a couple in Mexico :

Hope this helps...

Nick

I really wouldn't bother with a chip upgrade, man. Leave the computer tuning to a time when you have modifications on the car that could really benefit from a fuel map adjustment.
