Take it in, unless you happen to have a pressure gauge.

If you have an AC pressure gauge, you can check to see if you're getting pressure at the low pressure side of the circuit. I think the lines are on the passenger side under the cover over the AC intake filter. Should be easy to check.

If you do have to take it in, have them pressurize the system and check for leaks. If no leaks, then it probably just has to be filled.

Please clarify "If no leaks, then it probably just has to be filled"

The AC system uses a liquid coolant. It works by compressing it (squeezing the heat out of it) and expanding it (absorbing heat). If there's a leak in the system, this liquid leaks out. Over time, even if there are no detectable leaks, an AC system can lose some or most of the coolant.

When the coolant is low enough, the compressor won't even turn on, because there's nothing to compress.

Having the AC system checked for pressure should be something most any auto repair shop can handle.

I'd say take it to a dealer and have them check the system. If there are no leaks, have them evacuate and refill the system.

Alternately, your compressor could be fubar... which probably won't be cheap to replace.
